Hurricane Season Officially Begins Today...Be Prepared!

Well Folks, Hurricane Season is officially here as of Today, June 1st, 2011.  And it begins with a tropical system just of the eastern coast.  Hurricanes are nothing to laugh at, but fortunately, lots of warning time usually accompanies them, and having an evacuation plan in force is a DARN GOOD IDEA!

Every year, my family hauls the emergency kit out of the garage in May.  We check batteries in each flashlight and in the weather radio, we make sure our medical supplies are good to go,  and we confirm that there are plenty of candles in case of power outages.  We also stock up on LOTS of water, non-perishable food items and propane for the camp stove....Just in case.  In our kit, we also keep a deck of cards and some other small games to play.  We pack an emergency suitcase with enough clothes for a long weekend in the mountains (where we go if an evacuation is in order).   We backup all important documents regarding Homeowner's, Auto, Wind & Hail, and Medical Insurance.  We also keep backups of all family photos (do not want to lose those).  We line each cat kennel with a blankie, make sure we have the pets current on vaccines (keep a copy of records) and we even have a travel litter box!  It is also important to know  hotels  that allow pets, should you decide to evacuate for a storm.  If you live or work on the island of Bogue Banks, Make sure you have your Re-Entry pass...you may not be allowed to enter without it!

This post is not to frighten anyone, but to make folks more aware about the importance of being prepared for the season.  Stay posted on the Tropics and pay attention to watches and warnings.  Having lived in coastal areas most of my life, I have seen what a Hurricane can do, and I refuse to take any chances.  My family and I hit the road with our pets, our emergency gear and our suitcases for any storm over a Catogory I....I can replace my house and the items in the house, but I can't replace my family!

My favorite site for staying informed about Hurricanes and Tropical Storms is The National Hurricane Center and my favorite Hurricane Tracking Site is US Navy.

Thanks to Lenn Harley for inspiring this post with your comments this morning....Better to be prepared!

Well it is business as usual on this planet...We would learn much to study nature and how it just digs in and rides ti out...Our version of lying under the bed until it passes doesn't hold up too well now a days...

Richie - I've never survived a storm lying under the bed, but I did spend Hurricane Ophelia in the bathtub with my 6 month old, five cats, and a dog....That's why we evacuate now :0)

Glenn - Thanks...Being Prepared is SOOOOOOO important.

Laura - Don't worry....Peak season isn't until the end of August!  And, you are right, I am Prepared enough for all of us!

Do you have enough canned goods in the event that we're all trapped in the Hahn Hurricane/ Bomb Shelter for an extended period of time?!!! And NO Spam products please!

All kidding aside, this is a very serious post and anyone reading it should insure that they are well prepared in the event of a hurricane.

Craig - We will have plenty of supplies for the Hahn Hurricane Shelter...No SPAM....I promise!  Lots and lots of spaghettios, chicken noodle soup, and of course....Mac and Cheese!  In case of a power outage, we'll have a big Cook Out and empty out the freezer....We even have a power converter so we can make Margaritas in the car if we have to!

Wow Amy,  I guess I am glad to live in Denver, but I worry about my sister in St. Augustine, Fla. for the last 13 years.  She has yet to drive inland and she lives 2 blocks off the ocean.  She gives me gray hair.

Will - Just keep in mind, that the Weather Channel often makes a storm appear much worse than they actually are.  Once, I was watching the weather man on our beach, it looked like he was holding on to the pier for dear life....I stepped out the back door and it was like....Dead Calm!

In the case of an actual serious storm, A lot of folks will ride the storms out and hope for the best...Not Me!  I have a feeling your sister would evacuate if she needed to!  You know, there are products out there to take care of your gray...:0)

Ellen - My fingers are crossed, I've said my prayers.....Please no Hurricanes on our Coastal Areas this summer!

Frank & Karen - I'm always afraid to say it, but we have been pretty darn lucky so far.  I can't wait for your trip here either.....No Hurricanes that week for sure :0)  Fortunately, we get lots of warning, and My family and I....EVACUATE!

Nick - I think you have enough to worry about with tornadoes....My goodness, you guys have had more than your fair share of Nature's Fury this year.  Hope things are starting to look up in your area and rebuilding is going well.   Having grown up in that area, I think of all you folks everyday!

Hi Amy,

Ugh!  Not hurricane season.  Seems like the country has been through a lot with a bad winter, spring floods, and tornadoes.  Let's pray for a very quiet season.

I hope the hurricanes get just close enough to provide nice waves and then shoot back over the Atlantic.

Amy, as you know, Ted and I are all prepared and hoping that we're wasting our time.  We have gas for the generator and he started it up over the week-end to make sure it works.  Lots of water and all the other things we might need.

I think of my brother and all my family who were caught unprepared when the tornadoes hit a few weeks ago.  Their real dilemna was lack of drinking water.  Thank goodness our family members from Tennessee were able to get through with trunk loads of bottles water.
