Whatcom County: Restaurants Hurt by Sour Economy

By
Home Inspector with King of the House Home Inspection, Inc

I read the other day that, on a national basis, the economy is killing many public amenities. For example, I guess that -- on a widespread basis -- many of the public pools are being shut in communities around the nation. Locally, and in the state, many teachers will be receiving pay cuts.

Locally, the newspaper did a story today that made sense. They said that the higher-end restaurants are being hit hard in Whatcom County. People might have the cash to shell-out for McDonald's or Taco Time, but many struggling families are no longer going to nice places that come with pricey meals. Going to such places is being limited to special occasions. And, in an area with a small population, such as Whatcom County, it is hard for a restaurant to pay the bills on special occasions.

Anyone who wishes to read the full article can find it in today's Bellingham Herald.

That's interesting but I think we all have been struggling a bit...I think that I support the local restaurants all by myself!

No doubt the higher gas prices are affecting these businesses too, in terms of products and services needed to support them.

Not much surprise here.  Or there for that matter.  Discretionary spending on the margins gets hit first.
