Kennewick Washington, the largest of the three cities that make up the Tri-Cities, is known widely for its unique characteristics and aspects and was once known to the Native Americans as “Grassy Place” or “Mild Winter” due to the wide expanse of rolling fields and the mellow winters that take place in the town.
Even though Kennewick is known for its vast countryside, it is also known for its sophisticated development due to the growing population. An example of Kennewick’s evolution from farm-town to uptown is the Columbia Center Mall, located in downtown Kennewick. It is the only mall in the vicinity.
Also in Kennewick, many regional events such as concerts, coalitions, conferences and sporting events take place at the Toyota Center, the area’s arena. The Toyota Center is home to the Western Hockey League team, The Tri-Cities Americans, as well as the 2005 National Indoor Football League champions, the Tri-Cities Fever.
There are many beautiful parks in Kennewick including the mini water park and roller hockey rink located at the public library. Another notable park in Kennewick is the Playground of Dreams in Columbia Park, right on the Columbia River. Columbia Park is home to the annual summer Hydroplane races where people come from miles around to watch the speedy boats race through obstacle courses. These races and Columbia Park are famously known not just because of the good times they offer, but because Kennewick Man, the ancient skeleton that caused a massive controversy with historians, anthropologists and Native Americans world wide, was found on the banks of the river during the boat races at Columbia Park.
Two bridges, the Cable Bridge and the Blue Bridge, are the heart of the whole Tri-Cities connecting Pasco and Kennewick right over the beautiful Columbia River.
