How To Baby-Proof Your Property

A new baby can bring happiness to the entire household. But with a baby in the house comes additional responsibilities and enormous adjustments. A lot of preparation is required in decorating, organizing and outfitting a nursery, but one of the most important aspects that one must consider is to baby-proof the home before the baby arrives.

Check the baby’s crib thoroughly. Examine the screws, slats and other parts to ensure that the crib is sturdy. Crib slats must not be more than 2 ¾ inches apart. Keep the crib clutter free; remove the toys when the baby is occupying it. Make sure that any electrical cords and the cords of the window blinds are beyond the baby’s reach. These can both be obvious hazards to your baby’s health. The crib must also be far away from the window.

Examine the paint in your home. If it was built prior to 1978, you should call the National Lead Information Center to know how to get the paint in your home tested for lead. It is advisable to reduce the temperature of the water heater to 120 degrees in order to avoid burns and scalding. You may want to buy bigger diaper bags that can even be used as emergency bags when needed. Keep a list of baby’s needs including medicines, doctor’s name and phone number in case of an emergency. Keep all of the baby’s medicine in one single case that you can easily grab in case you have to hurry.

One of the most important things you must do while baby proofing your home is to cover all unused electrical outlets. You must also buy cabinet locks for every cabinet that contains potential dangerous items such as laundry items, cleaning supplies, liquor, medicines and sharp tools like knives or scissors.

Keep away all items that can cause suffocation like plastic bags, bubble wrap or other small items like buttons, jewelry, nails and screws. These small items can be dangerous and could cause choking. Use door locks and baby gates to keep the baby going off limits. Buy gates that can be screwed on the walls and that offer protection around the stairs. Buy corner guards and edge guard to protect the children from the sharp edges and corners. Use door stoppers or door holders to avoid smashed fingers.

Secure the pool by installing fencing around it and locking it high enough so that children aren’t able to reach. And as a precaution, teach the little ones to swim at an early age and proper pool safety.

Most important of all, watch your child. There is no better protection than the watchful eye. But for moments that your eyes wander make sure that you home and yard is a safe place for your child.
