QR codes

Enjoyed the discussions around our post yesterday about Marketing with QR codes.  It sparked quite a few questions, emails and calls.  So I thought I’d try and answer a few of them this morning...

Let’s start at the beginning....  if you have a smartphone you’ll need to download a QR code reader.  Just Google ‘QR readers’ and you’ll find lots to look into but here’s a few for the more popular phones...  they are easy to use once you have them on your phone - you just hold your phone over the funny looking box and voila - the info will show up on you phone...

Where to get scanners for YOUR phone?

  • iPhone QR Scanner (free)  download from the iTunes Store
  • Android Barcode Scanner (free) head to the ‘Market’ app on your phone.  Do a search on ‘barcode scanner’ - install
  • Nokia - Nokia Barcode Scanner (free) some phones come with the scanner installed if not head to their website
  • Blackberry  - Blackberry Messenger (free) if you don’t already have the BBM you can download from their website

Once you have your phone set up the next step is to consider where and what you are going to use your QR codes for.

As I mentioned in yesterdays post, if you are going to use a code on your real estate marketing material a great place to start is with RealBird.  They have already done the work for you.  Once you upload your listing, their system automatically generates a QR code with the url for your listing.  It’s pretty cool in that it will adjust the return to the device .

But as I also mentioned there are other ways to use QR codes.  But just where to go to get your own QR code generated?  Again there are quite a few places to choose from and if you Google ‘QR Code generators’ you’ll come up with a whole list of suggestions.

I’d like to share one that I think is pretty cool for a couple of reasons.  It’s called myqr.co.  Reason I like this one is that it allows you to choose either a URL or a vCard for the QR Code.  You can play around with different colors, and even track the useage.   Here’s a quick summary on how I use it....

I forgot to mention you can also generate a QR Code for a map from myQR.com.

Do you have another favorite code generating site?  Let me know...

Sure hope this helps to answer some of the questions concerning QR Codes.

Hi Lee and Pamela,

Thanks for the post.

Very complete and detailed.

You reminded me that I had not downloaded a bar code scanner on my newest Android that I got a couple of days ago...

Thanks

Good Morning, Lee and Pamela.  Thanks for sharing this great information on QR codes. I just got a new Samsung Droid Charge phone, and my FREE QR code reader was called "Scan Life".

You pointed out some great sources to use, and I can't wait to get started today. You might want to add Google URL Shortner for keeping track of all those clicks to your QR codes. http://goo.gl/

Also, I have found QR Code Generator to be quite useful too. That link is http://www.qrstuff.com.

I am bookmarking this post and I already hit suggest too.

You're very welcome Phil, are you using QR Codes now?  I like the barcode scanner for the DroidX, works really well.

Pamela, the QR code I have so far I got from Google Places.  I'm still unfamiliar enough with QR codes that I didn't realize I could do more with them!

I'll have to check out some of the options you talked about in the near future.  Thanks!

Thanks Jeremy.  I was wondering do you do any mailings to advertise your services?  You could use the QR code on the postcards/flyers pointing to your website (especially the before and after pics!)

Let us know how it goes for your Kathy.  There's some great ideas here in the rain on using the codes!

Pamela, I don't do any mailings currently, but will keep it in mind to use them in print media.  I have sticky pads that we pass out as well as business cards, so I may consider putting the QR codes there.

Thanks for the idea!

GREAT explanation on the basics of getting started with QR codes Pamela!  The top questions I'm asked are "how do you read them" and "where do you find the software."  I'll now be pointing those people to your blog!
