The Tomato Machine - How to grow tomatoes in Clark County WashingtonThe Tomato Machine- How to grow tomatoes in Clark County, Washington. (Video included)

Growing an abundant crop of tomatoes can be challenging for many gardeners in our area - and especially given this Spring's unusually cool and wet weather.  Tomato plants love heat and it's optimal to have at least 70 degree days with moderate temperatures at night. Does it sound almost impossible to grow tomatoes in Clark County, Washington?  It's not, if you have the secret weapon, "The Tomato Machine."

Michael Stucky, owner of Millennium Farms in Ridgefield,  starts growing his tomato plants as early as mid-March, way before the locals suggestion, "to plant the garden once the snow is off of Silverstar Mountain." While, we don't plant our tomato plants in March, we do adapt part of Stucky's tomato growing magic into our own garden. Each June, we create our own version of Stucky's, "The Tomato Machine." Our homemade contraption helps ensure healthy lush tomato plants that are capable of producing plenty of ripe tomatoes in late summer and early fall.

Normally, we plant all Heirloom tomato plants, but because of this year's weather challenges, we planted three popular tomato varieties known for producing well in our region, which is Zone 6.  Early Girl, as the name implies, doesn't require a long season, plus it's a good slicing tomato. Stupice is favored for it's hardiness and early yield, but especially for it's sweet flavor, speaking of which, so is the Super Sweet 100, an easy to grow cherry tomato that produces long strands of yummy flavored fruits.

Keys to ensuring a timely harvest include trimming off the lower third branches on each plant and burying it about a 1/3 of the way down - placing red plastic at the base of the plant(s) - and also by sprinkling an organic fertilizer and lime (dolomite) at the bottom of each planting hole. Naturally, of course, your real secret weapon is, "The Tomato Machine."

Recently, in an "Exploring Clark County, Washington with Mac and Me" segment, we filmed one of our "Tomato Machine" creations to share with you. Hope you enjoy it!

Well look at that!  Mac's all ready for the video debut! What a great idea for a hyper-local post Debb!  Well done!

I used to be a huge tomato/gardener but haven't spent much time with it the past couple of years.  We get a fantastic crop mainly because our growing season is so long...  but the dry hot weather makes it hard to keep things going, unless you have lots of spare time.

here's to you and Mac and baskets full of fresh vegies!

Hi Pamela, yes Mac's loving the good life - sitting on lawn furniture and soaking up the sunshine. Thanks for the support - and taking the time to watch the video and comment.

I'll bet you do have a good growing season for tomatoes - that's one of the only negatives about our gardening season. Some years (such as this one) we just need another month or so of heat. Hopefully, we have photos of a great tomato crop to share late this summer!

Debb this is one of the greatest ideas since sliced bread.  We have planted our tomatoes and they are doing alright even have some blossoms, but I am going to show this to my husband and perhaps we will do this as well.

By the way, your video is really good, your presence is great, so professional in my opinion.  It makes me feel you were in broadcasting at some point.  Very enjoyable.  Thanks

Mary

Mary, thanks I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Don't know if you remember 97.1 Kisn and Donovan and Debb --- I'm the Debb of that duo. I did a teeny bit of TV, but mostly radio.

Let me know if you run into any hitches with the Tomato Machine, I'd be glad to answer your questions.  :)

Debb, VERY NICE!  I have actually watched this video a few times.  I like "Exploring Clark County, Washington with Mac and Me".  You have chosen a good partner and an excellent theme.  You accomplished a lot of good stuff in this video, and you are just getting started.  Nice beginning, nice ending, nice content with easy to follow instructions and delivered in a friendly and helpful manner.

You have made me want to plant tomatoes.  What could be a greater compliment for a video, than knowing that you have inspired a viewer to take specific action, as a direct result of watching your video?  When appropriate, you can inspire me to buy or sell a house.

Always let it be known what you do, but, give viewers something of value instead of asking them to commit to you as a real estate agent.  My only immediate suggestion is to give thought to including your easy to remember Web Address, at the beginning of the video, in addition to the closing.  Just in case, they do NOT watch the entire video, you will have planted a seed (not a tomato seed).  After viewing several of your videos and hearing your email address over and over, they will remember it.  You may also want to include your phone number at the closing, just in case a viewer would prefer to call.  You have offered something of value to your viewer, and this type of video format will make you very popular.  Thank you for providing such a good example for others to consider.  Best wishes always.

Richard - thanks so much for your welcome advice and support. I'm still disappointed in my camera work and some of the audio glitches - but, as you mentioned in your Ten Tips - you just have to keep working at it and learn from your mistakes.

Your suggestions are perfect,
and I will implement both the web address at the beginning and add my phone# at the close.

By the way, I hope you do plant some tomatoes - be sure to plant some basil too!  Thanks again, and talk to you soon Richard.

Hi Debb, I just watched your video. I heard about it on Richard's blog. I think it is really well done. I think putting your contact information, on an overlay, would probably be helpful to many viewers.

Debb, it is a great video.  Maybe you could do a follow up later with Mac in on the harvest.  :)

You might add your area to your intro - 'I am Debb James with the Carl group in Camas, Washington .....'

Virginia, you are so one of my favorite ladies in Active Rain - I just read  your super funny post on Richard's re-blogging of my video. Very, very funny. And yes, I will add the Carl Group in Camas as per your suggestion...it makes good sense.

I've got to run now and take Mac for a walk.  ( Or, is it Matt? Max?)

By the way, you must be selling a ton of real estate 'cause I haven't seen a blog peep out of you for awhile.
