This 4th of July Weekend Make Sure It's a Safe One

Please Buckle Up.

This brilliant and moving video captures the true essence of the importance of seat belt use. Please buckle up folks.

About a thousand years ago, when I was in my late teens, and before seat belt use was mandatory, I was the first person on the scene of a deadly accident.

I won't go into the details, but suffice it to say that I saved two people's lives that night... Two other people didn't make it.

They probably would have if they were wearing seat belts.

It was from that moment on that I have worn my seat belt each and every time I get into my car.

And I won't even put my car in gear until all my passengers are safely buckled up.

So this weekend when you go out to celebrate our nation's birthday, please remember to put on your seat belts.

If you've not seen this video, I suggest you view it now. It's brilliantly done and truly captures the essence of the importance of seat belt use.

This 4th of July Weekend Make Sure It's a Safe One

Please Buckle Up.

Craig, actually I am in pre-production for a film with a friend/fellow Realtor who lived in LA 20 years and moved back to Jax a few years ago. The first draft of the script is being written now. Will definitely remember you when it's tiime for casting! :)

Erica - I hate hearing about these tragedies Erica. Such a shame. Buckle up people.

Christopher - Great point Christopher. It's just not worth ruining your life or possibly hurting another's just because you had to have one.

Alan - And because people can do crazy things, it's best to buckle up and be safe.

Sharon - Please do! You are aware that I was in the original "Godfather" and "Top Gun" movies.... aren't you?!!!

Wandanna - You hit the nail on the head Wandanna. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Jeff - Thanks Jeff. And I couldn't agree more. Life is so fragile.

In 2007 I was in a terrible car accident in my 2005 Nissan Frontier. I was lucky to walk away with some cuts and burns from the airbag.

The passenger floor had crumpled all the way to the glove box (I had swerved at the last second). If I had been driving with a friend, they would have been severely injured.

Luckily I was driving solo. If I had hit head on, my injuries most likely would have been much worse. I was extremely lucky. The firefighters and medics were amazed that I didn't have more serious injuries. They said if I hadn't been wearing my seatbealt I would have died on impact without question.

Do you think I wear my seatbelt EVERY single time. You bet!

It's so funny to hear someone talking about how we should use seat belts. For years I would not wear one just becuz I was afraid I would get "trapped" inside the car, in the event of an accident, and not be able to get free. (Of course, I am a product of the rebellious 60's). Then the government got involved (like it always does) and made it a "law".  I do fasten my seatbelt now...as I don't want to get "ticketed"...and I still wonder....shouldn't this be the right of the citizen to decide and not government mandated!

Debe - I do have my soft side. It's rarely seen.  But it is there.

Roger - Very powerful stuff Roger and brilliantly done. Happy 4th to you and yours my friend.

Tyler - Tough lesson to learn. But thankfully you were able to walk away and share the importance of wearing a seat belt.

Ruby - Good job Ruby! I think if even one more person wears their seat belt as a result of this post, the re-blogs and the folks who shared the video on Facebook and Twitter, then we've accomplished something here.

Patricia - It's akin to helmet laws Patricia. Some feel it's up to the person not the government to decide. But if you've ever pulled a car full of kids out of a wreck like I have, I think this is one government interference you'd accept... rebel or not!

Great reminder and video. Gets the message out without the grisly views of the old Pennsylvania Highway Patrol movies.

In another life, as you mentioned about a thousand years ago, I raced stock cars in Reno. I had an idler link fail as I approached a corner at full speed. Left the track end over end hitting on the roof with sufficient force for the roll bar to sever the roof. Thanks to a surplus air force full seat belt/shoulder harness I walked away dazed but with no injuries.

A few years later I glide tested a telephone truck off the Mt. Lemmon highway near Tucson AZ in the dead of winter. About 75 feet down I encountered a rather large pine tree and managed to wrap the truck frame first around it. Some really bad bruises to my hips but walked out just fine thanks to the seat belts.

Dammam Saudi Arabia, I was "T" boned by a rather large truck in a hurry to get somewhere. Removed the entire front of a full sized Chevrolet sedan at the fire wall. Not even a significant bruise to complain about.

Don't try to get me in a vehicle with out a seat belt! It won't happen.

Awesome video. I have worn a seat belt most of the time. Once I found out my "insurance company" - the military - could deny my free medical benefits if I was not wearing a seat belt, I have worn them ever since.

I'm very sorry for what you saw, but thank god you were there.  Yep in going back to basics wearing the seat belt is one of those things.

Marshall - You, my friend, are one lucky guy. Glad you're here to tell your story and that you never get in the car without your seat belt on.

Gerard - If denying you insurance was one of the reasons you always wear your seat belt, then I say good for your insurance company!

Emilia - Thank you Emilia! You have a happy and safe 4th too!

Sharon - That's what I was thinking! Happy 4th to you and Frank!

Mike - What I saw ws devastating, but it changed my views on seat belt use. I will never get in a car without putting one on.

Thank you for posting this. The video is great.  To add to the sense of "this can happen to you," the below photo is from early this morning.  My 18 and 21 year old sons wearing their seat belts walked away from rolling the car over on the interstate in Wisconsin.

Henry - Thank God your sons were wearing their seat belts or the outcome might have been much worse. I wouldn't even want to imagine what you'd be going through right now if they weren't.

Thanks for the reminder.  We should always wear our seatbelts no matter what.  It is good to also remember that the most deadly driving season is between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
