The 4th of July is a great holiday!  I loved it as a kid . . . we had a lovely park that we would walk to and see the display.  They were great!!

Now that I have dogs . . . the holiday is not so great!  Well, not for my dogs, Poppy and Molly.  They really react to the noise.  Those bombs bursting in air are very hard on them.

In reading Marte Cliff's Remember Your Pets This Weekend I wanted to tell you what I do . . . to calm them:

DOGGIE DOWNERS!!!

Yesterday I made the trip to the vet and got them a prescription for tranquilizers!

I found this the best way to calm them.  In Marte's post she tells how a dog climbed over a 6' hight chain-link fence and ran away . . . forever . . . freightened by fireworks.

My dogs act WEIRD when they hear thunder and firecrackers.  They try to hide, and Molly once tired to tear out the laundry room door, just to get into the secluded area to hide.

Acepromazine is the drug of choice for my doggies.  In writing this post, I Googled Acepromazine and found it on-line at 1-800-Pet-Meds . . . for $.62 a pill.  I'm an IDIOT . . . I paid $39.00 for 15 of these little tablets.  DANGIT!!  I could have gotten 15 for under $10.00 . . .

. . . So FOR NEXT YEAR . . . I'm going to get them from 1-800-Pet-Meds.

NOTE/CAUTION/WARNING:  I have the 25 mg tablets . . . . DO NOT CONFUSE 0.25 as 1 tablet.  USE ONLY 1 TABLET AT A TIME.  For smaller pets they have 10 mg tablets.  BREAK THE TABLETS in HALF and start with a low dose.  Ask your Vet for the proper dosage amount!!  My Poppy is 105 lbs., and I gave him ONE 25 mg. tablet . . . here is the result:

 He's sleeping . . .

Cute blog.  I understand that your dogs are afraid. I have friends who have the same problem with theirs.  I will have to tell them about the pills.

We took our pups to the range with us to be used to gunfire when they were small so it's not problem at our house. :)  But we do keep them inside during the fireworks because the "sparkles" in the sky might freak them out.

Carla:  My dog hates fireworks too!  He thinks he has to protect us from them and barks whenever he hears them...and not a little bark but a huge German Shepherd bark!   Hope your fur babies don't get to depressed from the tranquilizers.....maybe some extra special treats will help!

Regarding the on-line pharmacy...I just saw a big 60 minutes display on these and you cannot trust them.

Sometimes they are fake drugs, from overseas, they called them "Counterfeit Drugs", and some can cause medical problems!  I would pay the extra at the vet and know for sure you have the right thing!

Hi Team Honeycutt . . . be sure to read Jane's (#3) comment!

Hey Tammy -- My Poppy is a Schutzhund, and the could have been Police trained (they use Schutzhunds, females), but he's just a big 'ol pet.  Yes, dogs can be trained for "noise" sensitivity . . . mine are just a bunch of big babies!!  LOL

Hi Jane . . . THANKS for that extra comment.  I did not know that.  Okay, so now I feel better.  Poppy is a German Shepard and barks for protection, but cowers with thunder and fireworks!  And one good walk in the park clears up any sluggishness right away.

Carla - good to know you aren't an IDIOT after all! And it's not just pets that get freaked out with fireworks. One of my best friends is a Vietnam Vet and is extremely uncomfortable around fireworks.

Poor Poppy is too pooped to pop!  This is a good idea for some dogs.  I tried this once with benadryl for kids & didn't work at all.  I'm lucky my dog (Bella the blunderdog BTW) doesn't care at all about fireworks or thunder.  You don't even need a prescripition any more at PetMeds.  Put your vet's phone number on the sheet - they call for an OK to refill.  That way your vet can't stick you for another visit.  Not many people know you can do that.  I do that for heartworm meds.

Agree that is is best to pay more if needed and get from a vet -- there are many reports that drugs on line may not be what you think they are. All the best. Happy holiday.

Carla - One of my dogs is terrified of thunder storms along and fireworks, but she'll just hide in my bedroom.  I did try doggie downers once and I felt horrible because she stumbled around like she was drunk....maybe the vet gave the wrong dose, but I haven't tried them since.

Our Doggie got out last fourth of July and ran off.  We heard through the grape vine some one found him and he has a nice home (he was very distinctive.) and we decided we were so busy with 6 kids we would let him stay with the new owners.

I love fireworks....just not in the neighborhood.

Such fireworks caused our family dog to run away one Fourth. Never to return.

That is a really good suggestion!  Thank you for including the link and instructions.  Pets and fireworks definitely don't mix.  This is a sad fact that a lot of people don't think about.

Carla - for folks who don't like prescription drugs: Feel Bach offers a Bach Flower Essences product called Thunderstorms that works well for fireworks too. You can put the drops in their mouths, or just put a few drops in their water dish.

I didn't mention it in my post since it's too late to send for it. They also make a product called Home Alone - for dogs with separation anxiety, and their Feel5ive for Pets helps with general anxiety from moving, a new baby, losing a loved one, etc.

Bach Flower essences are safe - no side effects or feeling "drugged," and no interaction with other prescriptions.

I've heard that some health food stores and pet stores do carry flower essences - I haven't checked because I always order from Feel Bach.

Carla ~ I have the same ones for Kobi.   But he's only 22 lbs. and the vet prescribed 10 mg tablets.  When I give him 1/2 he can barely walk, so I need to maybe cut it into 1/4s.

How come I never tried that? I had a Greyhound for 13 years and Juyly 4th was the day from h-ll! And any day there was a thunder and lightening storm.....I use to think he was going to have a heart attack and die on the spot.

Now he's above them all and looks down on them. I don't think he can hear the noise.

For some reason my dogs are "ok" with fireworks.  We don't really have thunder regularly and they are usually ok with that when we have it too.  I think my dogs are weird!  Have a safe fourth Carla and keep those pups comfy!

Hi Cynthia . . . now I don't feel like a chump for paying $39 bucks for 15 tablets.  And I've heard about those flashbacks, they do sound like arsenal!!

Hey Lyn -- love your alliterative!!

Hi Benjamin Realty . . . expensive, but no subsitutions!!

Hey Michelle -- I know my dogs feel rested and one good walk in the park gets them back in action.  My vet told me to give my Poppy 2 tabs.  I only gave him one, and that did the trick.

Hi Gene . . . that's a sad story with a happy ending.  One less mouth to feed HA HA HA

Hey Jim -- WOW another one that got away!!  I know Molly would bolt if she could.  I drug her!!

Hi Carissa . . . in my neighborhood, I'm sure a lot of pets are terrified.

Hey Jane -- nightmare is right.  :-(

Hi Marte . . . GREAT tips for the non-pharmaceutical options!  THANKS!!!

Hey Dawn . . . Kobi is only 22 lbs.  WOW, I thought Kobi was a much larger dog.  Try less, and if needed you can give more.  That's how I do it.

Hi Thom -- I didn't think about it 'til the Vet mentioned it when I was talking about the 4th.  My Poppy dog pants and gets so agitated.

Hey Renee . . . love your holiday graphics!!  If only they knew what Mom was doing to them!!  HA HA HA

Carla, wish I'd read this a few days ago when there was still time to get some of this.  Willie is OK during thunderstorms, but not when the delinquent next door is setting off fire crackers in the back yard.
