Harubang ~ Stone Grandfather

Harubang

Many times I've noticed there are two identical statues on Anderson Lane in Austin, TX. I've heard it had something to do with the old Buffet Palace that was in business at this location so I stopped to check it out.

It has a plaque stating this statue symbolizes the Buffet Palaces unwavering commitment to bring you the best dining experience possible (when it was open)!

I thought this was interesting they used this statue as their symbol because the stone grandfather Toi-Harubang was found on Jeju Island at the southern tip of South Korea. The name stone grandfather was coined in the 1940's or 50's as a reference to their obvious masculine shape.  They are purported to be gods offering protection and fertility.  They were usually placed outside of gates for protection against evil spirits. Even today they are thought of as potent sources of fertility.

On this particular plaque it talks about a legend where the grandfather turned to stone waiting for his granddaughter to return after she went off snorkeling for abalone during a storm.

Our day to day time in real estate is so precious we can't afford to be frozen in time!  As Lillian Dickson once said: "Life is like a coin.  You can spend it any way you wish, but you only get to spend it once."

Dorie- imagine you and countless others have passed this spot and statue so many times without really knowing what it meant. And I love the tie-in with not standing still and living life!

Hi Kathy,

Isn't it funny we pass by things all the time and sometimes don't realize what we are seeing!!

Dorie, interesting post .  I especially like your quote "you can only spend it once."  Sometimes when we get so worried about how to spend it or whether or not to spend it, we get caught up in fear and never spend it.

It is great that the stone statues are there even thought the restaurant is gone.  And I love that saying about only going around once.

Dorie - really interesting history on the Stone man from Korea - however, I recommend anyone not wanting to get pregnant keep some distance - you never know...lol.
