Computer Acting Strange - Any Advice?

My computer is doing some odd things the last week, I need your help if you know what this may be.

It doesn't happen all the time, but at some point while on for a while the screen will flash off and on. The screen will become messed up: things missing, blank windows, and such. Usually I can get it to shut down if I click in between flashing screens. Sometimes I have to unplug the tower.

I ran anti-virus software but the flashing will start before the scan can finish. I also noticed that when the computer boots up. Some of the DOS characters will be a different color (ie. a purple "f" on a black and white screen. I noticed in the set up that some words were misspelled. Here is one example to the right.

I recorded the flashing with my phone to show what i see once it starts. this has never happened to me before. But I do remember what I was doing when it first started. I was editing the Closed Caption to a video on YouTube. It started when I shared info with YouTube from the editing software.

So I'm not sure if it is

  • a virus
  • bad monitor
  • video driver problem
  • compatibility issue

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the video of the flashing monitor.

Tom:  My advice is get thyself to a computer repair shop ASAP.  Call in the Geeks!  Don't mess around or you may finally see nothing but the blue screen of death.

Tom, what kind of computer? Make and model? Dell had some problems with failed components on the mother board which caused video display issues. It might require a bias upgrade. But check your video card, if it's built into the mother board, and you install a separate video card, it will override the integrated card. Have you tried booting up in safe mode? That will bypass the drivers, so you can tell if it's a driver versus hardware issue. (If it runs fine in safe mode then it is a driver issue, if you still have the problem show up it it's hardware) Safe mode is the barebones diagnostic for windows...

Tom -- what kind of technical support/warranty do you have? Did you post this on the net via technical forums for your laptop? Maybe there's an answer on youtube?

I find that as computers age --- usually after 2 years, they start acting strange, as if it's got a built-in signal that says "Buy a new one!"  Heard of planned obsolescence?

My 2 year old laptop just crashed...and reformatting didn't help. As you noted in my blog, I have an extended warranty. The tech just replaced my hard drive and my motherboard. So it's like having a brand new computer.

Good luck.

Tom, I can't offer you advice on how to fix your computer problems, but if I were you, I would make sure to back up the computer and plan to budget for a new one. Maybe it's time for a tablet!

Tom - you may have gotten a line of instruction from YouTube that you never took out. Looks like strobing. Have you tried just unplugging everything and rebooting.

Tom - I can tell you that with all the computer issues I have had of late that I might have been the one to experience something unusual for a computer but I have never seen anything like this. But back-up. I would normally say set the clock back to the last good day but this is an interference.

Do you have another computer? If so, Google or YouTube it. I find amazing answers on videos of some of the geeks out there. Or, it is time to take it in to the computer repair. They will probably pull the motherboard and state there is a short. Something is touching something it shouldn't.

Toni - Tried unplugging and rebooting.

Kristine - Great, the one thing that I'm capable of doing is not a good idea?

Ken - Like the Google / YouTube idea, will give it a shot. Thanks.
