Yankee Ultralight Flyers...Sanderson's Field Fly-In, Greenland NH July 8-16, 2011

For 20 years, ultralight and general aviation enthusiasts have been coming to Ted Sanderson's private 2,500' grass runway on Post Road in Greenland, NH in July for a week long fly-in, something resembling a cross between a rock music festival, camping expedition and sport flying adventure. With each passing year, attendance at this annual event continues to "soar" (do I hear 210,000 groans? Sorry, I couldn't stop myself), with all aircraft and the public welcome.

Yankee Ultralight Flyers "Club" was founded in late
Ultralight Trike 1990, originally meeting in Berwick, ME at Bob Ring's field and was chartered by the United States Ultralight Association as club number 202. Back in those days, ultralight aircraft consisted mainly of home-built small engine ultralights, but today their membership comprises the East Coast from Florida to Canada and includes not only enthusiasts of fixed wing ultralights, but powered parachutes, rotorcraft, and all manner of aviation aircraft. I'm told a recent fly-in included an owner of a DC3!

Sanderson's Field Fly-InYankee Ultralight Flyers Fly-In * Camp-In is as colorful as any Albuquerque, NM International Balloon Festival. Overnight and weeklong stays at Sanderson's Field in Greenland, NH are encouraged by the club, providing campsites, food catered by Angelino's Sausage House of Hillsboro, NH on July 8-10, live music including local bands like Lobster Creek and a large covered pavilion for central activities.

Yankee Ultralight Flyers is especially proud of their "Young Eagles" program, where youths between the ages of 8 and 17 can fly with any member of the club, receive a certificate of their experience and have their hours logged in the "World Largest Logbook." "Young Eagle" members number over 1 million!

The public is welcome. Please stop by if you have the Yellow Tail-Draggerchance. You will find the staff (in the yellow tee-shirts) and members friendly and welcoming. Be sure to tell them, "Some guy on the internet told me to stop by."

As you will see in the brief video below, aircraft are taking off and landing all the time, so be sure to have your camera handy for these exciting moments.

Good morning John;  O how I wish I could come.  Maybe next year with a little advance planning.  Thank you so much for the video and pics.

We'll have to talk about where I can lodge.

Hi Andrea - I'm sure many of these folks attend Moosehead too. Really like the idea of camping-in. That adds an element of community.

Hi Kenneth - This event is always right around this time in July each year. I should have included the website link in the body of the post, but for more info you can visit the website www.yankeeultralights.com. Lodging is not a problem. There are lots of places in the area!

Good Morning Maria - I might make another visit on Saturday to meet some new people and see some new aircraft. These folks come back year after year. Hope you have a terrific day!

Ultra lights are so very cool, John. My mother-in-law (who passed away in Dec. at 93) always talked about flying in an ultra light. We used to watch them take off in SC when we visited.

Hi Toni - I'll bet she would have loved it! It is still on my bucket list as well, although I have been up many times in single engine planes and really enjoy that. Chris' son Eric is a pilot and we used to fly and photograph my construction projects.

I think I'm planning a 2012 trip to NH.  Maybe we can have lunch together.

I always wondered what a "fly in" was.  I've seen the signs.  Sounds like fun!  Great photos, John!

John,

Now that looks like fun! If I was starting life over again, I'd want to be a pilot. The video gave me a rush! It sure looks and sounds like a lot of fun. Oh, to soar in the air like a bird....

This is a great post you put together!

Hi Sharon - You and Rick should jump on the bike and ride on over to Post Road. There were lots of motorcycles there too last Sunday. The event ends Saturday. Maybe I will see you there!

Hi Patricia - Me too. When I was young, I had no real interest in flying. It wasn't until Eric studied aviation at the University of Michigan that I knew I was drawn to it as well. If you do it for a living, it is a long and difficult road and you must pay your dues with blood money. You earn each type rating the hard way with long hours and short money. But he is getting there now and flies commercially from Miami to Cancun and Bolivia. Still a long way from the salary of an airline captain, like his father. So glad you came by!

WOW! John, that's quite an impressive story about you and your son Eric. The "long and difficult road you must pay your dues with blood money," kind of sounds like our business as Realtors® but much more dangerous!

You must be very proud of Eric and I hope he will earn those captain wings, just like his father. May you both continue to soar with confidence and stay safe.

Patricia - Thanks for checking back in. No doubt the (l)earning curve is similar to a life as a REALTOR. The employers for the kind of flying jobs you get when starting out know they can use and abuse you, because they know you need the hours for your log book. Even after getting hired by an airline and working your way up to a commercial airline captain, things are still uncertain. If you look at the mergers and takeovers of many major airlines over the years, it is always possible the new owners will not merge the seniority lists (theirs and yours) and may put your former airline at the bottom of their list, behind their current employees. Its sometimes a difficult life and I do not envy the struggle Eric's father has been through. Hope the week goes well for you!

Hi John~ How fun it must be to watch all varieties of aircraft land and hang around with people that are as enthusiastic and knowledgable about ultra lights as you are. It sounds like an engine roaring, eagle soaring good time!

Hey John, hope your surviving the heat up in NH. Maybe, your area hasn't been hit by the heatwave? I watched the video again and enjoyed it a second time. I love the sounds.

Hi Judi - Thanks for stopping by. This fly-in is surely a lot of fun. My step son Eric has landed and taken off from this field, but not during a fly-in.

Toni - Wish I could say we have avoided the heat, but that is not in the forecast. For over a week, we have been high eighties to low nineties, but tomorrow and Saturday, they are forecasting triple digits. I know how hot it has been for you. Hang in there...it can't last much longer.

Hi Rene - The temps over here are probably not much different than out your way. Unusually hot, this summer. Sure hope you have a nice cool place to hang out. I find I'm spending a lot of time at the office :-)

John, I bet this is a great event to attend with all those colors. I have a couple clients that are pilots and would LOVE to do this!   One bought land, just to fly ultra-lights in!

Hi Joan - The folks I met at this event were quite enthusiastic! Your client who bought the land was really planning ahead. Was it open land or does he have to clear it? Hope your week goes great!
