Beach Day, Nantucket!

Yesterday, after a hearty breakfast at the Even Keel Cafe, we did some random shopping along Nantucket (window shopping really) we then commenced to full vacation mode, and headed to the beach.

Below is the Jared Coffin house, which is a ship captain's house (or was) in the heart of downtown Nantucket. Ship captains' like to show their wealth by using heavier (=costlier to build) building supplies, such as brick.

Now, I live about a mile from the beach in Jacksonville Beach, on the long side, so when I go to the beach with friends down there, it's a low key event. You bike, bring a chair and a towel, and something to read. We can't legally drink on the beach, to there are few to no coolers. Oh, and you can drive on the beach in St. Augustine, however, not on any of our Jacksonville/Neptune/Atlantic/Ponte Vedra Beaches, which naturally limits our abilities. We do have public parking adjacent to many of our beach accesses.

Well, going to the beach on Nantucket is kind of like tailgating, apparently!

First step: load up vehicle.

Second step: drive to beach access. Yesterday's choice=Surfside.

Third step: release proper amount of air from tires to facilitate driving on sand. Proper PSI=18 lbs.

Fourth step: find your spot in the sun, and enjoy.  We had, along with books and of course our phones:

  • Crudite tray
  • Sandwiches
  • Salty, crunchy snacks
  • Chairs
  • Towels
  • Beach Blanket
  • Beverages (including 3 vodkas, several mixers, key limes, rum, muddling equipment for mojitos)
  • Portable generator

We had a great time, even though for a Southerner like me these days, the breeze was a bit cool, and the Atlantic a frigid 73 (that's wetsuit weather in Jacksonville Beach, FL!), we all got some color and had fun.

Surfside "frigid" surf!

Carol ... oh how I miss Nantucket.  As an ex-pat from Boston now living in Annapolis Maryland since 1994, I miss the annual sail I made to Nantucket from Boston.  It was always a week-plus trip to the island and back.  And a bike ride out to Surfside was mandatory now matter what the weather!  Thanks for sharing some photos of downtown and the beach!!!  It's going to be 100 here today, wouldn't it be wonderful to jump into some cooling Atlantic waves on a day like today!!!  You're in the best spot in the world.  Enjoy.

Stephen: I grew up in Bergen County, and we used to summer on Block Island, so coming up here is like old home week for me a bit.

Keith: It's fabulous, I have to say!

Connie: Thanks! I love it up here!

Good morning Caril. I really enjoyed your pictures and accompanying narrative. I hope you continue to enjoy yourself. Be thankful for the cool breeze, it's wicked humid where I live.

Carol, What a great sounding vacation.  I too love to visit candy stores.  I have never been to a beach where you can drive up and park, interesting.

Carol....of course I am laughing at 73 being frigid water temps!  When we go to the beach, that is considered warm water! I think there is also a Coffin house on the Vineyard.

Sheila: It is fabulous and I'm so lucky - I'll post more pix.

Navona: It's pretty cool to be able to drive on the beach, you just have to know HOW to do, and what prep steps you need to take.

Christine: I know! I summered on Block Island for many years having grown up in NJ, but the milder temps of Jacksonville Beach have spoiled me for good, I think!

I forget to mention: muddling is the gentle intro of mint to mojito!

Nantucket is one of those places that lives in the Fairytale Factory of my mind!  I don't know why exactly, but it does!  And the house in the top photo is precisely the type of architecture I would expect to see.
