BOOK REVIEW

'WATER FOR ELEPHANTS' by Sara Gruen

If you don't follow my Blog, then let me just start out by saying...
I don't have a favorite author, but I do have a few that I really like.  I'm alway's open to suggestions, so if you've read a book that you just couldn't put down until you finished it...PLEASE, let me know!!!

'Water for Elephants' was recommended to me by a friend who is a member of a local book club.  It is a New York Times Bestseller and a movie has also been released based on the novel.  I haven't yet seen the movie, but as soon as I see it at the Redbox...I'll be renting it for sure.

The story is 'one-of-a-kind' in my opinion and spans the life of the main character 'Jacob'.  You know the old saying, "I think I'll runaway and join the Circus"...?  Well, that's EXACTLY what Jacob did when he tragically found himself without a family and no money.

If you are an animal lover, as I AM, parts of this story will bring you to tears and make you VERY angry!  But, hang tight, because out of most of the 'bad' comes some 'good'.  The timeframe of the novel is around the Great Depression, so the Circus life was not for the weak-hearted.  These people worked very hard for very little....but, the show must go on!

The book has it all...tragedy, adventure and romance.  I highly recommend 'Water for Elephants' to those of you looking for a story that will grab hold of your heart.  Warning:  Make sure you have a box of kleenex handy while reading!

The next book on my list to read is 'Shanghai Girls' by Lisa See.

Hey Denise~ I'll have to add that to my reading list.  We actually started a Virtual Reading Group here in the rain.  I've already read our current book and I think you will absolutely love it.  It's told from the dog's perspective.  The book Title is Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.  I'm going to send you an invitation to join the group.

Hi Denise.  This sounds good.  I will have to check it out.  I love stories about animals.

Hey Belinda -  Just remember my warning!...keep kleenex close by while reading this one.  Let me know what you think once you've finished it....OK?

I have seen the movie previews.  I don't know if this is for me.  Hate to read bad things about animals as I am very passionate about them as you know.

Debra - I know what you mean...I am a bit skeptical about watching the movie, because of the way the elephant was mishandled in the book.  I admit, I kind of skipped over some of the disturbing paragraphs in the book...Gotta love that about the 'printed word'....you can select what you want to read and what you don't.  Just to let ya know, the story did have a good ending :-)

Hi Denise, I am so passionate about anything with animals and want to rescue them from all hurt.  I am sure I would be sobbing while watching this movie.

Me too, Judith!  I would save every poor little animal in need if I had a place to put them and the money to feed them....breaks my heart!
