Do You Take Your Cell Phone with You to the Bathroom?

The other day I had to take a little potty break.  I went to the stall and set my phone down on the top of the toilet paper dispenser and did my thing.  I then looked over at the phone and thought....hmmm...if it should ring, would I answer it now?  I am thinking it wouldn't be really professional to be talking on the phone whilst doingRestroom what I was doing at the moment...so why in the world did I bring my phone?

This brings up a little story...I was once talking to a lender at my home.  While doing so, I was walking around picking stuff up and I happened to pick something up in the bathroom...I put it in the toilet and flushed.  As soon as I did that, I realized what the lender must have thought.  I started laughing and said...honestly, I wasn't doing what you think I was doing.  I know I had to have been a beautiful shade of purple and red!  I was that horrified that he may have thought that I was using the facilities while talking business!  He laughed and said that I would be amazed about how many folks actually do go to the bathroom while talking to him...mostly men (his words, not mine).  That astounded me.

Anyway, back to my point.  I say that I am always available.  I'm a 24/7 Realtor®, but really, I can't be.  It's not humanly possible!

Available in the dictionary means suitable or ready for use, of use or service; at hand.  Clearly, like the situation above, I am not available 24/7.  If I could be, trust me, I would.  There are times that I must use the restroom, sleep, eat, spend time with family or any other myriad of things such as being with another client.  Accessible on the other hand means easy to approach, reach, or speak with.   I am definitely accessible meaning I am easy to approach (well, unless I am in that stall, that would be weird), reach and truly easy to speak with.  You can call my cell phone and leave a message if I don't answer and I will most definitely get back with you as soon as I am able.   No worries, I usually answer my phone...just ask anyone...I am extremely quick about it.

So, I have decided from now on to leave my cell phone out of the bathroom.  Aren't you glad knowing that I won't answer it while I'm doing that?

love the humor ! however sometimes when youre on hold forever with a lender and u have to go .... I work from my home office. I will have it on hold or mute  for a couple of minutes and ask them to wait. I would not want to start the call cycle all over again ...

I have my attached to a clip on my belt so I take it with me. I have to be careful it doesn't drop off my belt! I rarely answer my phone while taking care of business unless I'm at home, even then it's normally family.

I love your post!  I only have my phone with me if I am out in public and cannot leave it alone at the table. I am NOT 24/7, I have a life and a family! BUT I have been in the restroom only to hear a woman having a complete conversation as she was going to the bathroom.  What made things worse was there was a small line and she was obviously just relaxing and talking in one of the precious few bathrooms.  I busted up when one of the ladies in line went to the next open stall and began flushing repeatedly.  She got the point.

Thank you all for your additional comments :)!  I am so glad the majority of you thought this was a fun post :)!  It is meant to be silly, but allows for a liitle thinking of how, when and where we maximize our time on the telephone :)!  Some are terrific multitaskers and have learned to use the ole mute button, some are unapologetic and use the phone whereever and then there are some of us who have decided that is definitely our time :)!

Loved all of the comments...even those who disagree!

My daughter lost her cell phone doing that! She stood up and reached for her phone that she had laid on the back of the tank. At the same time she flushed the toilet....she dropped the phone and that was the end of that. LOL!

I almost ALWAYS take my to the bathroom.  It is a rarity that I would answer it.  It would have to be a family member such as my mother for me to answer it or even my best friend...but as soon as I pick up I tell them where I am.  The rest is up to them to imagine what they might hear.   ;-)

The reason I take the phone to the bathroom.....I am usually so stressed that I can't make it a worthwhile visit.  So I play a game of solitaire or backgammon.  Makes the process go so much quicker-LOL!  Joy

Yes I do.  I know not to flush or to give an indication of where I am.  I have told people I was not in a position to write anything down and have asked them to e-mail me or let me call them back.

I wear my Bluetooth so I don't have to take my cell into the bathroom to answer it. Hey, at least I wait to come back later to flush the toilet.

The idea of being available 24/7 is a great one, and I fully subscribe to it. But being available 24/7 really means that although you may not answer every incoming call (you may be on another line or with a client), you will be back with the caller within 30 to 60 minutes. I think buyers and sellers' expectations are such that they can reach us anytime. I am really okay with that. But not in the real literal sense. My pet peeve is when agents say they are available between 4 and 5 for example. Well what if I'm not available  as a client. With email and cell phones I think clients really feel that they are entitled to being able to reach you in short order. I'm okay with that.

I swore off taking my cell phone to the bathroom after - I dropped it in the toilet one sleepy morning. I was holding it, walked in the water closet, turned around and it slipped out of my hand - my iPhone! (They really don't like water.) We put it in a bag of rice, but I still had to get another one. Couldn't wait 3-4 days for it to dry out to see if it worked. An expensive mistake...

It's a funny story and I won't be surprised if any one of us actually talked while in the bathroom.  We are so 'married' to our phones these days! I wouldn't take calls in the bathroom, but had been tempted.

Guilty as charged!!!  But once I left my phone on the toilet dispenser in WalMart and left the store without it!  I was in PANIC MODE!  Lucky my iPhone app "Find my phone" revealed the phone was still there at customer service.  Some wonderful person turned it in!

This topic has elicited more responses that many of the serious topics that are posted.  A little levity is always welcome.  Who really cares if you take your phone into the "private office" or not.  I often do  take it with me, as it is a habit of mine not to leave it laying around.  Answering it is another issue.  I don't answer it at meal times either....and I don't care if its the President calling. Meal time is family time, always has been and always will be. If the call is important, voice mail is always available, and I do return calls to all callers if they leave a message. Every person will have different criteria as to where they may make or answer calls, just be professional when doing so. Grunting or chewing during the call may be give aways.

Often at conferences or classes during breaks I hear people talking on the phone in stalls whilst going to the bathroom.  I have always wondered about that choice - not professional and I'd be just plain embarassed.  I do sometimes bring my phone with, but just because I bring it everywhere, not because I plan to answer it.

The question is why do the most important of the day calls happen during your potty breaks. Inquiry Minds would like to know?
