My 1,900+ Mile Midwest Road Trip

Road trips are fun but exhausting!  I recently made a 1,900+ mile trek across the midwest to visit family and friends, attend a wedding, and to do a little bit of exploration in the process.  The google map below shows the route I drove.

I took one full week to travel from Junction City, KS and back while making overnight stops in each of these cities:

  • Branson, MO
  • Bloomington, IL
  • Sheboygan, WI
  • Dubuque, IA
  • Topeka, KS

Along the way, I passed through metropolitan areas including Kansas City, St. Louis, and Chicago.  I even took on the challenge of driving into downtown Chicago during the noon hour on a Friday!  What a joy it was to accomplish parking!

The big cities have so much to offer and I enjoy going there for the photo opportunites and varied cultural experiences.  I also like the less-traveled county highways that pass through the small rural towns where life is less hectic.  I had a taste of the fast lane and the slow pace on my midwest road trip and now that it is over, it's back to business for me!

Have you had a recent road trip or will you be taking one soon?  I'd like to hear about your road trip journeys!

Hi Paul-

I smiled when I read your road trip post., especially your venture to Chicago  It brought back memories of when we lived there.  Next time, try to head a little further and catch Texas too!

Isn't it great to get out and refresh your perspective?

Wow! THat was quite a road trip! I did one at the end of Dec to drive just me and the dog from Richmond KY to Scottsdale AZ. I took the southern route through Little Rock, Dallas and El Paso. Everything went great until on the way back at the end of Jan I was 27 miles west of Abilene on I-20 and there was black ice on the road. So I was stuck there 4 days. Didn't think I would ever get home!

Sara - I love to travel so Texas is in the plan...I just don't know when!  I've been to Big Bend National Park, San Antonio, and the Hill Country of Texas and I enjoyed them all.  There's much to see and do in Texas!

Lizette - It must have been a long cold spell to have four days of black ice in Texas!  And black ice is probably more dangerous and deceptive because it is not obvious like a blanket of snow or a quarter inch of ice on everything.
