You can change the name but you can't make us say it

Squaw Rock, California Landmark #549

The Government has given in again, this time by considering a name change of a California landmark. Some folks think the name "Squaw" is derogatory (for the record, I don't), and have tried time and time again to change the name of Squaw anything to something else.

Our "politically correct" population hasn't yet been successful with changing the name of Squaw Valley in Lake Tahoe, home of the VIII Olympic Winter Games held in 1960, but it looks like our beloved Squaw Rock won't be as lucky. The new name? Frog Woman Rock.

When will people learn you can change names all day long but they won't stick. Who are they trying to fool?

The San Francisco 49ers stadium will always be Candlestick Park. The San Francisco Giants staduim will always be PacBell Park. That NASCAR race track thingy will always be Sears Point.

Frog Woman Rock? Nope ... it will always be called Squaw Rock. Always.

Sigh.  I am a married Native woman, and I know you are so buried in your own privelege, you won't listen to me, but here goes.  "Squaw" is a derogatory word.  Most non Indians refuse to understand this, because we are only a small percentage of the population.  So that most people now recognize epithets like n***er as a highly charged and rude word (and thus don't use it unless they are intentionally trying to be provocative for a particular reason) but using racist, mysogynist words about Native women is A-OK.  Well, all righty then, so nice to know how well I and my sisters are regarded here in the 21st century.

Also, you all don't understand Native mythology.  There is nothing wrong with Frog Woman, any more than Coyote (a figure I am assuming you are all more familiar with).  Since at least the 19th century (and probably going farther back than that) whites have garbled or completely made up "Native" stories (these Lover's Leap stories a particular favorite) and now when the real indigenous stories are told, people have a fit.  So sad you cannot appreciate the real history and legends of this land.

I grew up skiing at Squaw Valley and probably can't erase the word from my memory.

@Trish: we're a very blended population in the US....there are so many words that are somewhat offensive to someone. The "N" word is much more racially charged, I think, than the word squaw.

Cynthia~ You are so right ~ although it seems Trish has a different opinion~ We are all getting so 'politically correct' we don't know how to talk to one another anymore.  In Chicago we have Willis Tower.... it will always be Sears Tower to me-sorry not changing on this one.

Trish - I listened.

Leslie - There is a bungy jump at Squaw Valley where you jump off a cliff. I stayed in the lodge and had a black and tan. No thanks!

Kim - Trish missed my point. Changing the name of something doesn't mean diddly squat. People will still refer to its historical name. I didn't even know Sears Tower was renamed. You are right, it will always be called Sears Tower.

Wow... next thing you know, they'll be giving Frog Woman some legs so she can jump off the cliff!  What the fish... Cynthia!  Squaw is alright in my book... and I happen to absolutely love Squaw Valley too!
