Days 2-12 With The Droid...

I had thought I would be able to more consistent with this, however, there have been so many adjustments, I have not had time to catalog every one and write about them.

In short, I still really love the new HTC Sensation 4G....there are, however, some definite differences which include:

  • Not having Outlook on my phone; there were a few refernces to being able to purchase a software to do this; I'm addicted to the notes and tasks, so I've been trying some work arounds including Funambol and a Google Calender. No final decision reached just yet; if anyone has suggestions/advice, I would love your input.
  • The fob for the Supra lockbox entry is photographed as being something that looks like it would fit on your keychain - IT IS DECEIVING! It is actually about half the size of my phone, and quite bulky. I decided to put it on a lanyard and leave in my car.
  • Multiple/duplicate calendar and contacts; most likely due to my not setting syncing controls correctly. I'm in the process of hiring a PA, so I've got to be able to have her have access emails/contacts and am still figuring out what that means.
  • Messaging program seems to mean every time I leave the last message/text, I'm leaving it as a draft, which I don't want to do.
  • Going through contacts for phone calls/texts is not as streamlined as I had imagined; could be operator error.
  • I managed, somehow, to go through 2 GB of data in about 3 days....not anticipated! I think the streaming radio I listened to for 3 hours was the culprit on that one.
  • Great screen resolution, quick internet navigation, and long battery life are on the up side - I have not yet run the battery down in one single day, and I can actually be on the phone AND open a lockbox, which is what my old-old Treo allowed me to do.
  • Love the HD camcorder! Used it to film a walkthrough of a house for out of state buyers, and then posted the video in a private folder for them to access on You Tube.  Very crisp images, good audio...

Carol - this is timely information for me as I am considering purchasing a Droid.  It sounds like you have it covered and will enjoy using your new tool.

I've had a Sprint EVO 4G smartyphone since Feb.  I just had 4x4 QR code stickers made at my local SirSpeedy and I could not get it to scan.  When I was picking up the stickers, I asked Kim at SirSpeedy to show me how to do it and VOILA!  I had not taken the clear plastic off the phone's camera lense....works GREAT NOW!

These phones are REALLY tools....Mine just needs a BETTER tool to use it!  HeHeHe

Good morning Carol-I have one and well I will say I like it. It amazes me with all the tricks and stuff but frustrates me too. Like Wallace said its probably NOT the phones fault!

I stll use my Droid mostly as a phone. Apps I use are in bold throughout this post.

Navigation for a GPS when my car one does not find or when there is traffic (because google shows up traffic snarls as red and clear roads as green), calendar, files anywhere (for faxing and to access critical files) trying astro (for accessing our critical files) starting to use sugar sync,...because the phone's speaker failed. losing all my settings. bummer. Recently heard and am trying out mighty meeting.

synch to outlook or another site to synch  via gmail /calendar Realtor.com, Google Talk, The Weather ChannelCamScanner to take pictures of business cards and auto import them into your phone. Bump to exchange info. GasBuddy to find cheap gas anywhere you are. Johnson Bubble Level to tell if something is level. Flashlight (duh), Real Calc, Karl's Mortgage Calculator, Knots Guide (Boy Scouts, GStrings Free (music tuner), Redbox (subscribe for free movie 1st monday of the month) lookout in case phone is lost, Skype mobile for those international buyers.  I don't use a Supra fob. Still have aPalm Zire because it is much cheaper...

When I was starting out, I searched "top android apps" or "best android apps 20xx" ...then, got a barcode scanner and downloaded from Android Lib go here  to read reviews  before scanning the qr codes and downloading (much faster and more intuitive for new users).

Love the camera and cam, although not too good in low light.  Can use the camera to take a picture of a contract and send as an attachment (although the files are pretty big if you use normal settings...

think this will become a blog? Yup  What's on YOUR Droid?

Nice overview of what you have enjoyed and the limitations.  I am waiting for the newest iPhone - I have an original iPhone and limitations and frequent disconnects have become a problem.

I have a Droid X.  You must download the app "advanced task killer" it closes all applications on the phone like cleaning a browser. (gives you back memory)  I dont use outlook on my phone however I do have my non gmail mail account come to the phone.  Also get "a-track dog" it will remove the apps you install and do not like.  I use a paper agenda.  I don not trust an electronic planner. so I cant help you there.  I have seen too many people loose thier information.  Good Luck with your New Droid. If your GPS is anything like mine you will LOVE it and never use a garman or Tom Tom again.

When I had a Droid X, i got CompanionLink for synching with my Outlook. That may resolve some of your challenges. So much information out there about how to do it, but I gave up and just bought the software. Seemed to work at the time
