Who is listening on Facebook?

Reblogger Jeff Turner

I love it when people test things.

In this case, Celeste tested my guess that perhaps 10% of your friends on Facebook were actually "listening" to anything you have to say. And, she did it in a way that helped her prove her own point. You gotta applaud that. :)

Original content by Celeste Grupman

Recently, Jeff Turner wrote this blog post -- Your Facebook Friends Are Not Really Listening.

The blog post was a response to this tweet: @imranpoladi says his friends on #Facebook follow the “1-9-90%” trend… 1% comment, 9% Like, 90% are just listening

Turner went on to explain that while he liked the symmetry of the statement, he found it hard to believe that more than 10% of your Facebook friends even have the chance to be listening.  This is due to Facebook's throttling functions and the shear capacity that any of your friends have to actually pay attention to what everyone in their feed is saying.

Also ready to prove a point I posted this:

At the time of the post I had 311 Facebook friends.  10 people posted comments.

The next day I continued the test by sending this email:

SUBJECT: Who is listening on Facebook?

If you wouldn't mind answering- I'd really love to know! Thanks.
Yesterday on Facebook I posted this comment:
If you would like me to send you $100 please post here, even if you are just listening. Thank you.

Please choose the best answer below:

  • I didn't see it
  • I saw it but thought it was spam
  • I saw it but didn't want your $100 so I didn't respond
  • I saw it but knew you wouldn't send me $100 so I didn't respond
  • I responded - now send me my cash

I sent the email 279 of my 311 friends.  81 were opened and 53 people responded.  Here are the results as reported by SurveyMonkey.com

How this breaks down:

The Facebook post yielded 10 online response, or 3%.  The survey showed that at least 25 of the 311 were indeed listening, or 8%.  If you add the 5  who actually responded on Facebook but were not accounted for in the survey the percentage rose to 10%.  (Jeff Turner's original guess.)

Now let's do the numbers on the email.  29% of the people opened it and 19% of people were willing to engage by responding to the survey.

What this means:

If you are looking to connect with your audience and encourage engagement the numbers are in.  Email is still very much alive and should still be a part of your marketing mix.

You make a very intersting point. I wonder  how those numbers would change if you were able to break them down by age, occupation, education, marital status etc.

It actually just started as an elaborate part of my 'Make Jeff Turner Smile Social Media Strategy.'  Only after I perturbed half of my Facebook friends with empty promises and cryptic emails did I start to see that it might have broader application in furthering my less important strategy of attracting new users!

Jeff - I HAVE to read my e-mail as it could be from potential clients looking to sell their homes, whereas no one is going to post on FB that they want to sell their home.  FB is optional, but e-mail is mandatory.

Jeff, it's intuitively obvious that 90% are probably not listening - but your clever study quantified the numbers nicely!

Jeff  I think you're absolutely right that email marketing is going to reach more than Facebook.... but if we've learned nothing in the past 5 years it's that real estate marketing strategies have to be a good mix of what works for an individual agent to reach her/his clientele. My experience and intuition tells me that although only 10% may be listening, that 10% is a group I'm not reaching in any other manner (they are "not mets", folks I've lost touch with otherwise, people that I simply don't have contact info, etc.).

Gail  Not true. I am lising a home in the next two weeks that came directly from a Facebook comment. I get initial contact from my sphere about buying/selling through Facebook now more than any other source, including email.

Jeff, In this market, you really need to try each of these tools to be visible and stay in contact with your dateabase.  I believe in face to face contact as a necessary tool, as well.

I have often wondered about these numbers so this is great to see it quantified. I suspected it was about 10% and I am glad to see I was about right on that. I have had good responses from my consistent email marketing

Interesting information.  The attention span of the internet user is pretty short due to the rate with which we consume massive amounts of content.  I like how Facebook now tells you what percent of your audience you've reached with each post.  They, unsurprisingly, match up to this claim.

Clever study... I agree the skimming that occurs when online with facebook is quite common and substance isnt what we're looking for when scrolling..for me I like the pics and articles passed around :-)

Email is key--tell us more about Happy Grasshopper..

I agree and would like to add that email response

goes up much higher when you write

YOUR OWN messages.

(I've tried automated systems and drip campaigns...ashamed to say)

but nothing replaces the real and authentic YOU engaging your customers.

PS - If you don't know what to say, go learn! Get into your customers' mindset or take a course on writing autoresponders.
