Healtiest KidsNew Hampshire ranks # 1 for kids well being.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation recently released its 2011 KIDS COUNT data Book which looks at children's well-being on a state by state bases.

New Hampshire has ranked #1 for the best place in America for a kid to live for the last nine out of 10 years.

The 22nd annual report ranks all 50 states on 10 measures of well-being.  The data were collected from 2000-2009.

The recession, areas of high unemployment and a faltering economy have had a impact on kids.  Children in New Hampshire are more likely to graduate from high school and lease likely to have a teen pregnancy  New Hampshire ranked among the 10 best states in all categories, including child and teen death rates, percent of teens not attending school, percent of kids with no parent work, percent of low-birth weight babies, infant mortality rate, and percent of children in single-parent families.

Concerns were raised for New Hampshire and other states about the number of children living in poverty.  Child poverty increased from 6% in 2000 to 11% in 2009 - an 83% increase in 9 years. However, New Hampshire remained among the lowest levels in the nation (18%).

The Survey included two new statistics - foreclosures and unemployed parents.  In New Hampshire approximately 3% of children or 17,00 have been affected by foreclosures since 2007 and 7% or 20,000 had at least one unemployed parent in 2010.   Nationally, the report indicates approximatley 5.3 million children have been impacted by a home foreclosure and nearly 8 million children have 1 parent out of work.
