The Ostrich Farm Lofts  -- South Pasadena CA

Originally opened in 1886 by Edwin Cawston, the Cawston Ostrich Farm was the United States' first ostrich farm and a popular tourist attraction.  It has been stated that the original ostriches made their journey from South Africa to Texas and eventually by train to South Pasadena.  It wasn't an entirely successful trip as only 18 of the 50 ostrichs survived.   Eventually, the Ostrich Farm had a population of over 100 ostriches.  During the early part of the 20th century, visitors could be taken on ostrich drawn carriage rides and buy ostrich related items at the factory store.    

Designed as live/work spaces, 53 loft condos were developed in 2006 from the historic Cawston Ostrich Farm, a historic landmark building.   In 2009 an auction was held to sell the remaining units.  

The Ostrich Farm Lofts range in size from approximately 700 square feet to over 2000 square feet of living in a project that is known for its adaptive reuse of a former factory.   There are gardens and terraces in a gated environment.   The units feature high celings and polished concrete floors.  The location is convenient to the Gold Line Light Rail System as well as the unique shopping and dining of South Pasadena.

There is a loft unit(a short sale) currently in escrow at $299,000 and a first floor unit available for lease at $2200(furnished) or $2000(unfurnished).   This past week, I represented one of my clients who leased a second floor unit with a private terrace at $1500 monthly.

Belinda -- nyet, nope not a live ostrich in sight at The Ostrich Farm Lofts but I'm sure you would have enjoyed it in the early 20th century.  If only we had time travel.

Hi Ron - The Ostrich Farm Lofts is quite an interesting place with lots of history -- South Pasadena was quite the destination for all things Ostrich.
