Text Messaging – Love it or Hate it

textingMany of you younger folks may not know this, but we haven’t always had text messaging.  In fact, I remember when the first cell phones came out.  I had one and boy was it heavy.  It was a big black leather case with a brick in it that was the actually phone.  It still had a curly cord attached to the base, but I could take it anywhere and I was so proud.

Today, there are so many choices with cell phones and technology.  I have a Blackberry which I have had for just over a year.  The buttons are looking a little lopsided from texting so darn much.  I told my husband that I need a new iPhone, but he says I must wait until February.  I will muddle through until then.

My husband just bought a new Droid and is so impressed with all of the functionality.  He was showing me how you can use a voice program to dictate your text messages in to the phone.  Color me NOT impressed.

I told him if he was going to dictate the text message, then just call the person.  I know that is so yesterday, but really?

He mentioned that I am the queen of texting and can usually text without looking at the screen.  I told him no one wants to talk on the phone all day and this was a simple way for me to communicate.

I have to admit, it is invasive when people text you non-stop and want to know what you are doing at any given time.  It makes it hard to just exhale at night and relax at times.  It is times like this I select the SILENT button on my phone so I can check text messages when I feel like it.

Apparently my car has a feature where it will read the text messages to you while you are driving.  Not loving it!  Nothing can be that urgent on a text message.  I would rather enjoy my Sirius radio and get to the text when I feel like it.

I love text Belinda but there is a point where you have to say enough is enough.  Life was so much easier when our clients couldn't call, text,IM and Facebook chat with us at all hours of the day and night.  Every once in a while we all need a little down time from technology!

I really like it as a function. But, I am a late adopter of many of the new phone features.

I remember those brick phones although I never had one. My friend, a salesman for Qualcomm, was so proud of his. I thought he needed a psychiatrist...........

Lloyd.  You are a kind man.  I am anything but young, but sometimes I feel like a kid.

Will - with anywhere from ten to twenty texts from you a day, I think you have it down to a science.  I'm just saying....

Rebekah,  You are so right.  Sometimes I long for the days of only land lines, but then I wake up.

Eric,  looking back it was all so silly.  What good were those brick like devices???  It wouldn't fit in my purse or my pocket.

Belinda -- I also had one of those early version brick telephones.   When someone asks me(typically a new client) if I text --- I say sure but I will not text(read or write) while driving(besides it is illegal to use a cell while driving in Ca).

I text all the time but I can't say I really love it. It reminds me of needlepoint. It's fine work trying to hit all those keys without making mistakes. Sometimes I find it annoying.

Belinda I make it a point not to text with friends, clients yes, but not friends. That keeps the texting sane. It is great to have the text or call option for clients. It is nice to be able to do a quick text while buyers are looking at property without having to call.

Michael, Texting while driving is a death sentence.  Never a good idea.

Jill,  You are right it is sometimes very annoying.

David, Seems like a good guideline.  My daughter texts me non-stop!

Texts come in when calls do not go through i find. I still believe text messages are useful to an extent. The fact that you can have it read out to you while driving is amazing in my opinion.

Good afternoon Belinda,

I have many clients who really like to text..especially with questions that requires a quick answer:). I don't want all our conversations to be texted but it's amazing how many can work just fine :).
