What Was I Talking About??? or.... "I'm A Buttinski!"

I have a rather bad habit of interrupting people. I don’t mean to do it……and oddly enough, this is something that I have little tolerance for when other people do it to me.

I know that I need to be a better listener. And I try to, really I do, ...that is until I’m listening to someone that’s been talking about her son’s baseball accolades for…..well 8 minutes and counting……and I begin to think about other things in my head, while still smiling and looking like I’m paying attention….and then I might blurt something out of the blue because I just can’t take it any longer………

she: “and so then his coach told us… ”

Me: “oh that reminds me………do you still want that “Phillippa Gregory” book that I was reading?”

Anyway……..this “butting in” habit does come in handy with my friends now that I’m heading toward 50…. They will be talking and I will actually be listening, because, truthfully -  I do find most of my friends most fascinating!!…..and I AM interested in what they’re saying. But then...  wait!....it happens………they are talking….blah blah blah….and then….oops, like it does to most of us (and some of us…..on quite a regular basis!)  -- That word is gone………they are searching for it……searching...searching.....it is usually a very simple word, that they use often in life…….and learned it when they were very young……..a simple word like “garden” or “toolshed”…….and the person speaking can’t help but worry that maybe this is a early sign of “alzheimer’s”….and then they describe the word to you…… “you know……..it’s that patch of ground that you plant flowers or vegetables in….” They are helplessly flailing their arms in the sea………and this is your chance to “jump in”……..with permission!!    It’s almost like playing a game of charades, or cranium…….and you say (with not just a little excitement)…… “plot?” or “acreage?”…….no?.......... “garden?”   and then their shoulders relax ever so slightly when you guess the word…….and you both laugh just a little and one of you says……. “don’t you just hate when that happens?..........does it happen to you?”

and of course it does. (doesn’t it?)

Hi Nancy,  Interrupting people, when they are speaking, can be a symptom of ADD.  I just thought I would through that out there—another symptom is being random.

Gee, Nancy, I thought it was just me. The older I get, the slower other people seem to talk.  Sometimes it just takes them FOREVER to complete a thought.  In the meantime, my mind is racing about what to do or say next.  I think I need to go to Starbucks to contemplate this.  Just know - that you're not alone.  - Calie

Nancythis happens to me all the time...except that sometimes I am just not that interested in what they have to say.  LOL  Kidding of course.  I must agree with Calie that the older I get, the slower other people seem to talk.  I just have never put it quite so succinctly.  Betty

I don't so much interupt, as I find myself wanting to finish some people's sentence for them. I heard someone say once that they "talk fast and think faster". It's really frustrating talking to someone slower.

All the time! And you are describing one of my biggest pet peeves! Why do people have to go on and on with every detail of their life? I call them 'narrators' and avoid them like the plague. I love this post!!

Nancy - I know exactly what you mean....I am also in agreement with Leslie's comment, because I am ADD! So I struggle with this a lot! I do try to be mindful of my urge to jump in before my turn. ADD is very common among creative people so I try to look at it as a gift! You may want to check out a great website about this type of thing is    www.LDOnline.com    - Please know I am NOT trying to diagnose just thought it might be interesting to read some of the other characteristics!

honestly everyone, when people mentioned that this was a sign of ADD, I thought "me?  -oh don't be ridiculous..." - but I was in China last week with my sister Kate, and she was forever telling me to sit still and quit moving. She noticed that even when I was trying to "relax" on my bed......I was still moving my feet or tapping out a tune with my hands. I also "sway" constantly in a line.  hmmmmm  maybe you guys are right!          thanks!

Hey Nancy...do you drink lots of coffee?  I know my java limit...when I go over it...I am soooooo jumpy!  I think that as business owners AND as women, we multi-task excessively because we HAVE to!

I am ADD and proud of it! It is my gift and because of it...I believe I am even more creative, social, and able to read people in depth.  Knowing your "tendencies" such as interrupting people is key with ADD. It looks like you've already mastered "strategies" that will keep people from going on and on and on......They are probably ADD too so if you are too, its a great way to grab them from going around the mountain of "details" again and get them back on track!  LOL!
