Why Do Fairfax County Schools Start So Late??!!

This is the last official day of summer vacation for Fairfax County Public School Students. Every year, the FCPS system opens the day after Labor Day.

If you are from anywhere else in the country--or if your children attend private school--chances are good that they are already back in school. Not here in Virginia!

Virginia has a law on the books called, fondly, 'The Kings Dominion Law,' which prevents school systems from opening before Labor Day. The idea, was to keep seasonal employees working through the holiday weekend so tourist money would continue coming into the Commonwealth.

There are exceptions to the rule. This year, Loudoun County got an exemption due to an school busunusually high number of school days missed last year because of weather. Fairfax County's application was denied for this school year.

Every year, there is talk of changing this law and giving school systems more autonomy. Personally, I think a school system should be allowed to set its own open and close dates.  While it is kind of nice to know that we always open the day after Labor Day, for planning purposes,  my son has been ready to head back for two weeks!  Vacation is over, everyone is bored with the pool. Frankly, it is time to send the children back to school.

Any change to this law will have to come out of the Virginia General Assembly. While it is discussed almost every year, I guess they haven't gotten enough constituent pressure to make a change.

I hope your school year gets off to a good start--the Day after Labor Day!

Ours start after Labor Day too.....on Tuesday. That is the way I like it. As far as I am concerned, it is still summer until Labor Day.

Gene, I have heard some locations do the modified schedule, but our has always been traditional.

Christine, I am kind of torn; it is a nice end to summer and march off to school, but when my kids were in private, one of the schools started the week before with a modified schedule. It was nice to ease into it and then start in earnest the day after Labor Day.
