My Poppy Dog?One of the saddest events in life is when we lose something.  Today I lost my Poppy dog.  I've read posts from my friends and colleagues here on Active Rain who have shared their memories . . . the weddings, the births, the happy things we all share together here.   And the other things that life tosses out . . . the loses.  I've read about that too.

About a year ago I read Brad Andersohn's post There's a Rainbow Bridge For Man's Best Friend and today was my day to see my Poppy dog cross that bridge.

I've written about Poppy several times here on Active Rain.  Today is my day to write again and say good-bye to a wonderful pet, a faithful and loyal companion.

Poppy's health declined rapidly.  He just wasn't acting like himself.  We just know when something isn't right with our pets and a trip last Friday to the vet was the first step for Poppy onto the Rainbow Bridge.  Yesterday another visit and Poppy's health was reported as very poor.  Last night my son came over.  When I called Carlson yesterday afternoon, he could hear in my voice when I told him "Poppy's not doing well," that it was time.

Carlson came over at about 11:30 p.m. last night.  When he opened the door Poppy was there to greet him as best he could.  Poppy then labored to walk and then collapased.  Greeting Carlson at the door was Poppy's last welcome.  Poppy could not get up again and throughout the night my son stayed there with him, on the floor petting him and comforting him.

At 5:00 a.m. this morning we knew Poppy was suffering terribly.  I called Dove Lewis, a 24-hour emergency pet hospital and we arranged to have him transported to the ER via Yeller Cab.  The vet gave us the news . . . Poppy's heart and lungs were surrounded by fluid. And we knew . . . it was time for Poppy to cross the Rainbow Bridge.

And now my memories of a sweet dog, a kind and gentle pet . . .

And not to forget my other sweet dog, Molly who was Poppy's best girl . . . Squirrely Sunday

For many of the losses in our lives we hold on to the memories.  Today is my day for my Poppy memories.

Some might say dogs are just dogs . . . but for me I know my sweet Poppy was more than just . . . he was amazing!

Oh Carla... big tears from this sappy Naked Blogger ;(  I had to put my 'Timber' down on my B'Day a few years ago.  I was alone with no one to help... it was painful.  My only comfort was that she died peacefully at home in my arms.  Big {{{HUGS}}}} my friend!  Here is a video that makes me smile every time I think of her... GoD and DoG

Oh Carla, I am so very sorry.  I am grateful to Gayle for writing such a beautiful post and directing me here.  My two boys (both chihuahuas) are the loves of our lives and living life without them some day will be more than I can even bear to think of right now.  My prayers are with you and your son who so gallantly stood by Poppy's side in his last hours.  That bridge is indeed blessed by his presence today!

Dear Carla,

How wonderful to have the AR community who have learned about Poppy (and Molly) over time be able to surround you and show support. That's what friends are for - right?

Have a happy day - remembering the joys together -
Lynn

Carla,  I am so sorry for your loss.   Gayle posted the story of Poppy and as a dog lover, here I am .  I understand when you say "some might say dogs are just dogs."   I don't buy it. Tto me they aren't either.  They're part of my family.   I have tears as I write this.   Thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Carla I am so sorry about Poppy.  I didn't want to come here because I knew I would be bawling and I am.  The video did it.  As you know I am a big pet animal person.  It kills me when people say "it was just a dog (or cat)".  To pet owners they are family members and are sorely missed and you never get over it.  Time will help but you will never forget the love they gave and the extreme joy they brought you throughout your life.  Hugs Carla and again I am so sorry about your loss.
