Moving On - One Realtor's Tale

San Carlos, California, is a great place to live, raise a family, enjoy the beauty and benefits of living on the San Francisco Peninsula. I know--I've lived 35 years in the same house, 40 years in the town. It was a great fit for me--fabulous hiking, a friendly neighborhood, charming downtown, great rec center classes of all types, good schools--the list goes on.
Moving Day

However, lives change, needs change, desires change. At some point, it's time for big change. Two weeks ago my husband and I finally moved to our condo in San Francisco!

This is a move we'd planned long in advance. Close to 3 years ago we stumbled across the perfect place for us, not intending to buy, but this one place stayed in our minds for the next couple of months. One day we decided to take the plunge; prices had declined, the market had slowed--but the listing was withdrawn. A call to the Realtor confirmed that it was his own place and he hadn't succeeded in selling it. We structured an off-market sale and finally owned it. Since we still had a teen at home, we weren't ready to move, so found great tenants and waited.

In August our tenants left; our granddaughter had headed off to college a few months earlier -- our time is here! We're as happy as can be, enjoying our new urban lifestyle. Work continues; Gene telecommutes 2 days a week and heads to Sunnyvale the other 3--I hope he can switch the ratio next year. 40 minutes takes me to my San Carlos office; you'll still find me enjoying my work on the Peninsula and in Silicon Valley. That won't change, I just spend my nights elsewhere!

Hello Anna -- thanks!! We're having a ball, and San Francisco is a marvelous city for hiking, walking, running, opera, symphony, dining, libraries. Walking down to the farmer's market at Ft. Mason in a few minutes. Enjoy your weekend,

Bonnie, I know. I set a bad example, didn't I? LOL. Spent 38 years raising kids--now it's time for a change. Loving it! Best to you,

Lotie--I am so glad I stumbled across your post today.  We have both been busy this summer for different reasons.  Now fall is coming and life is just a little slower for me so I have been able to spend just a bit more time in the Rain.  I will look forward to seeing you more often to see how the adjustment is coming along.  Have fun!

Lottie, Congratulations!! I am so happy for you and your husband.  Life does require big changes at times.  Thankfully this one was by choice and by design.  I wish you much happiness and continued success.

Congratulations on your move, Lottie.  40 minutes is not that far, and you have the low maintenance of a condo in a great city.  I wish you much happiness in your new home.

Hi Mary, I'm glad you stopped by. It's funny how much we miss our time here on AR when life takes us elsewere. Glad you're back, and I vow to be. This has been an amazingly busy real estate year for me on the SF Peninsula--the move hardly broke the rythm at all--except that I'm so excited, happy and energized that I stay up too late organizing my new office. But that's another blog

Kathleen, hello! And what fun we're having here. Ft. Mason is 1.3 miles down the hill (fabulous Farmer's Market every Sunday morning, and of course the premier vegetarian restaurant, Greens) and the opera house & symphony hall 1 mile the other direction down Van Ness Avenue. Perfect for a couple who love to hike and walk. I hope I don't bore you all silly with the posts that are sure to come about our adventures.

I think you're right, Jane, that 40 minutes is acceptable. Great time to listen to tapes, to think and plan the day. And the added benefit, I think, will be more efficient use of my time. When I do get home, I'm home--free to take a walk, sit in the hot tub, or just enjoy the view.
