Where are the apricots in Los Altos?

At one point in time, most of Los Altos was apricot orchards.  Subdivisions were built mainly in the 50s and 60s so before those came along, most of the land was agricultural with lots of apricot orchards.  In fact, one of the last remaining orchards is located at the Civic Center.  There are a few other lots around Los Altos with a few apricot orchards.  A few trees remain as well.  The home I grew up in on Parma Way had an original apricot tree in the bank yard.  A few more locations include:

Los Altos Avenue - One of the last big lots about a half-mile out of downtown has a collection of old apricot trees.  It's one of the bright spots of the neighborhood which has been completely built out.

Corner of Campbell and Rosita - This house has a large corner lot with apricot trees.  The owner of this property has lived in the area a long time so hopefully these "cots" are here to stay!

Along El Monte - There are a few homes that have a handful of apricot trees.  They're great in the summer when the fruit turns orange.

Along Convington Road - A few of the estate homes have apricot trees out front and behind the homes.  The small collections of trees have been harvested in years past to create a source of locally produced, fresh and dried apricots.

There may not be as many as there used to but they're not all gone!  If you really love apricots, drive around the town to see what's left of the once large apricot orchards of Los Altos.  If you want to try and get a few local "cots" stop by DeMartini on San Antonio and they'll likely have a few.

Bryan, here in my town of San Leandro, CA. we have Cherry trees galore! maybe we can exchange some fruit down the road. Thank you for organizing the AR meeting in Fremont today, we had fun and it was nice to meet fellow ARainers in person and share a drink. Looking forward to the next one!
