Free electronics disposal at SeaWorld,
September 10, 2011

Those of us who have tried to recycle used electronics know that there is often a recycling fee, even though the electronics stores usually charge us a recycling fee when we buy the electronics (It's one of those add-on fees that you don't pay much attention to.).

SeaWorld San DiegoSometimes a company such as Home Depot or Staples comes along and provides a free recycling event. Sometimes a city will have a recycling even because it's better to just let people bring them in rather than drop them off on the side of the road in the dead of night. That costs more money in cleanup fees than just waiving the recycling fee.

During the last five years, SeaWorld San Diego has joined the list of recycling hosts. Tomorrow, September 10, from 8:00 a.m. to noon, SeaWorld will host its eighth recycling event during those five years. Their events have collected 275,000 pounds of waste and raised over $27,000 for local, state, and national conservation programs.

SeaWorld San DiegoAll you need to participate is to be able to show proof of state residency. That and some electronic waste to donate to recycling. Not everything that uses electricity is considered electronic waste. Acceptable items include:

  • cell phones
  • computers
  • computer monitors
  • copiers
  • fax machines
  • microwaves
  • stereo systems
  • televisions
  • VCRs and DVD players

SeaWorld San DiegoWaste that will not be accepted include:

  • batteries of any type
  • any time containing mercury, such as compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • washers and dryers
  • refrigerators

If you don't see your item listed, contact SeaWorld.

Participants get a 50% discount coupon for SeaWorld general admission that is good through December 25 and for up to six people.

Jim,  I think it is great that SeaWorld San Diego participates in ewaste recycling.  The fact that a 50% discount coupon is offered makes it even better.  It is a win/win!

That's great Sea World is doing that.  It's a smart marketing move to try and get the family in as well, and make a day of it.

With the amount of electronics tied to our daily lives, I don't understand why communities don't have drop off sites or bins scattered around like trash cans.

The recycling of electronics is key to our environment. Sure we need these conveniences but they do have lots of toxic components. Good for Sea World!
