North Myrtle Beach firefighters will make a show of support for those emergency responders who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Starting at 7:30 a.m. "six to eight North Myrtle Beach Firefighters dressed in full turnout gear will walk the beach from 48th Avenue South to the Cherry Grove point, a distance of about nine miles," according to a release issued by the City of North Myrtle Beach.

“The North Myrtle Beach firefighters discussed ways in which they might demonstrate their personal solidarity with the fire/rescue and other public safety personnel who perished in the September 11 attacks on America, as well as with those who placed themselves at great risk in looking for survivors and in clearing away wreckage," according to the release.

“They came to me this morning to ask if they could do this,” North Myrtle Beach Fire Captain Ken Frye said through the release, “and I thought it would be an appropriate recognition. Certainly, it’s a last minute idea but it comes straight from the heart.”

Frye said that he suggested that the firefighters break into three teams, with each team walking three miles of the nine mile trek but the firefighters were determined to make the walk together.

“Turnout gear is very heavy and hot,” Frye said, “but their perspective is that those who responded to the September 11 attacks endured far more, as did their families.”

The public is encouraged to come to the beach to encourage the firefighters as they walk. At 7:30 a.m. the firefighters will leave from 48th Avenue South in North Myrtle Beach and head north along the beach to the Cherry Grove point. It should take the firefighters up to three hours to complete the walk.
