Palm Beach County Library-Hagen Ranch Road- It's A Lot More Than Books!

The Hagen Ranch Road Branch of the Palm Beach County Library System is nothing like any library I remember. Granted I had not set foot in a library since I was in graduate school, but that memory was of books, books, and oh, yes, more books.

library

This branch is one of the newest in the Palm Beach County system, which includes 1 main library, 15 branches, a book mobile and Library Annex.  In 2010, the system has trained over 10,000 adults in Internet Usage and computer classes; circulated over 8.5 million pieces and my favorite fact, had 146 Adult Literacy Students log over 10,000 hours learning to read!

But that's not all this library offers:   Besides books (print, recordable and downloadable) , there are music CD's, DVD's, papers and magazines.  There are electronic databases for research, Senior Services, Teen and Kids programs, and so much more.

The day I was there a group of folk song musicians was meeting in one of the rooms.  Children were in the Children's area getting books and some were on the computers.

Who wouldn't want to spend some time reading or doing research here.  There's lots of light so you don't feel like you're "stuck inside!"

You can save time by checking out at one of the many "Quick Check Out" machines and there's even one kiosk that will pop up your DVD when you scan the cover.   Need to extend your book or movie... easily done online.  And if you're trying to find a particular book, no need to waste gas... just check in online and reserve it.

Good morning, Kathy.....now that's what I call "today's library".....there are so many towns in this country where the budget is depleted and libraries are not being updated with the latest and greatest methods of use.....some have a difficult time maintaining hours of operation.

Interesting.  My local library doesn't permit photos of the inside, anywhere.  I was planning to do a post about the wonderful service, etc.  Can't do it.

A very nice localism post, Kathy. Our local library has large windows on the roof so it gets a lot of natural light. Scanning at checkout would be a real improvement but then my friends, the librarians who usually check me out, would be gone tha wouldn't be good. I've known some of them for 25 years. We can go online to renew one time.

Great post Kathy-I love libraries and I think they are a key selling point for a town-this one looks fabulous.  I take books out of the library, borrow DVD's and sometimes just sit and read the paper in between appointments.

Libraries have certainly come a long way from when we were kids. By the way, next time you're in the library, check out Carl Hiaasen. He's an author who writes satirical mysteries that are all based in your neck of the woods. I'm currently reading "Skinny Dip" and it's pretty darned good... and funny too!

Kathy

The library on Hagan-Ranch Road in Florida looks like a library experience.

Good luck and success.

Marco- I was amazed when I went in to ours.  What I liked was seeing that so many people, of all ages, were using it.

Barbara T- that is so sad to hear.  If nothing else, we have to encourage reading!  And with the economy being what it is, I bet a lot of people find it helpful to rent movies and CD's there for free.

Michael- Thank you!  I'm glad they have funds for it.  I love the new techie way you can check out your books!

Josh- I'm glad with everything else facing budget cuts that we have such a good library.

Lenn- Hm-m- I wasn't sure when I went in but no one said anything.

BARFF- Like I said, the last time I was in one was in graduate school and they may have still had the old card catalogs. Oh geez... just dated myself.

Toni- well we have a lot of seniors who rely on our librarians for help but the line can get long.  Thank goodness for the quick check out.

Joanna- it's a great place for doing all of that.  Think about some of our seniors... this gives them somewhere to go to sit and read.

Craig- thank you for reminding me of him.  I read a few of his books when we moved here years ago and enjoyed them.  Will have to look for more.   Are you a mystery buff?

Lou- Thank you , and it really is.  There's always a lot of activity going on too.

HI Kathy, it seems that libraries across the country are going through a transition, they have to become a multi-faceted community center now, job placement, meeting place, voting place, and oh yeah, a library too.  I think it is long over do, but about time....yours looks very nice.

thank you for sharing your experiences with your cat and dogs on my Cat Conundrum post....that is good to hear.  We are supposed to start intros this week, so will keep you posted.

I worry about our community libraries...much like I do our small neighborhood bookstores. I love technology, but there's nothing like wrapping my hands around great book. Or holding a book and reading it to a child.

I recently read about a library that hosts "book clubs," what a cool way to bring in more library patrons. Sign me up!

Thanks for showcasing your community library Kathy. Dj
