The Quest for Karla, by John le Carre’ a must read before December or finish Ulysses by James Joyce?

I have been faced with a dilemma, as some of you know I love to Read. There are many Realtors who happen to like reading. Hence I do not consider myself a rare breed. So with that said I have been reading Ulysses by James Joyce and it has been a challenge. I found it to be a difficult read and have been moving slowly or should I say barely moving forward.

Ulysses by James Joyce

Than this past Saturday we went to the movies to see the Debt. (Diane and I loved it) As we were watching the Trailers (previews for upcoming movies) one caught both of our attention. Tinker, Taylor, Soldier by John le Carre’. So as soon as we got home I had to search, for some reason I was under the mistaken impression that we had every book by John le Carre’, go figure one book missing. Then I remembered that we had The Quest for Karla the published by Knopf in 1982 which had all three. So I excitedly dwelled into it and started reading. I read it about 30 years ago and hardly remember any of it. I love to know how the movie differs from the book. Hence I am reading it again.

So what would you have done, finish Ulysses or jump to Tinker Taylor, Soldier?

I don't think I read Quest for Karla - but TTSP, HS, & Smiley's People still stick in my mind.  To read Ulysses (both times) I almost had to put myself into a trance-like state and just let the words flow.  It seems to me there is, or was, a group in NYC that annually read Ulysses aloud in a marathon session... boy, would that take discipline to sit through!  But the reward is Molly Bloom's soliloquy yes, i said yes.

Dave, thank you for the support, BTW the three books were published together and called The Quest for Karla.

Ulysses, hands down.  Tough to start, tough to get going, but like Anna Karenina, definitely worth the wade.  Good luck with whatever choice you make.

I Like to read the book before seeing the movie too. There are some things thecmovie can't capture and you miss if you didn't read the book! Hope you enjoy the movie when it comes out!

Endre--In high school and college I was an avid reader, but have missed a lot of books.  I think it is more a lack of time than lack of desire.

I know that there are several book groups here in the rain.  I tried to join one, but dropped out because I did not have time to read the book that was being discussed.

Mary, I wen thru a phase of blaming "lack of time" then I decided life is too short, I do not need "reality tv shows..." and I decided to "make time" to read...just as I make time to "blog" that is what 9pm -2am is all about:))) BTW I agree with you I have not time to go and discuss the books in groups.
