GET AROUND NEW YORK QUICKLY BY BICYCLE - ALTA BICYCLE SHARE

PART I

 bicycle

In the summer of 2012, a new initiative is set to launch.

Alta Bicycle Share, a vendor based in Portland, Oregon (a known leader in green cities) will fund the multi-million dollar program which allows users to rent a bike from one part of the city and return it to another.

This can be a real time saver as it is often near impossible to get a cab, bus or other method of transportation quickly. It is expected to be especially popular with tourists.

About $100.00 a year will cover the cost of membership. The program will include 10,000 bicycles and allow you access to about 3 miles of New York neighborhoods.

Theft is not an issue as the bicycles are equipped with GPS units and are paid for by credit cards.

In terms of easing vehicle congestion and encouraging exercise, this cheap, green method of transportation is a good one.

This was put into place in Montreal in 2009 along with lots of new bike lanes.  I only vist Montreal occasionally, but a friend there tells me there has been a huge increase in bicycle use since then.  She says the drivers still don't give the right of way to bicycles when they should, so you have to bike carefully, but it's been a great boon to the city.

Peter - Thanks for taking the time to comment. It's nice to know it's been used successfully in other places. Part II of this post was going to discuss the pitfalls of such a program, as you've already alluded to.

Welcome to ActiveRain!

Jill,  This is a great idea. I love that they have gps tracking devices.  I bet you will see lots more bikers in the city thanks to this concept.

Sounds like a great program that is not only green, but promotes a healthy lifestyle as well!

Have a great day!

Jill, there is a similar program in the Twin Cities, and it very well-used even in the late fall and early, early spring.

Hi Jill, I thought the bike lane looked familiar! I'm curious to see how that will fly in NY. I know there is a big difference when walking across the street here in Portland..people actually stop the cars to let you. I have to remember that this isn't often the case in NY when I go back home..so wonder how it will be with bike lanes. It's a great thing and I give HUGE credit to those that commute this way. Look forward to your part 2!

Cindy - Your city is a role model to many - a real front runner.

Ron - Thanks so much for noticing. I was going to celebrate quietly. After all this work, I don't feel the need to blog about it, as I did for my 50k milestone. The rewards are internal.

Interesting. But if you need a bike where you are, and someone already rented it and took it half way across the city.... I see problems unless someone is scheduled to go to the popular places where bikes have been left, pick them up and redistribute them throughout the city.

Eric - They seem to have thought of that. We're talking 10,000 bicycles at 600 stations around NYC.
