Arthur R Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge- See a Part of the Everglades in Our Own Backyard

Arthur R Marshall

Located just a short car ride west of downtown Delray Beach and Boynton Beach, the Arthur R Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is a living outdoor classroom for any aged student wanting to learn about this interesting "river of grass.'     Loxahatchee (as this is called) is one of 553 wildlife refuges in the United States managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Inside the center is a short film about the Everglades that will give you a general idea of what the Everglades is and how important it is to our eco-system.  There is a boardwalk behind the center where you can take a short stroll and keep an eye out for any of the 257 species of birds that have called this refuge home.

There is a rim canal that is a favorite of kayakers and canoists.... oh yes, and alligators.

If you are curious at all about our land and what we owe it... take a trip out to Arthur R Marshall Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge!

Good morning, Kathy. I remember that the developers wanted to drain the Glades for development purposes. Little did they realize the impact on the ecosystem...

Every time I visit my folks in Lake Worth, I make sure to take a trip to Loxahatchee. It's such a nice walk through a very beautiful park.

BARFF- what do you mean "hope" we WILL!!!

Michael- you know what they did.. they planted Malaleuca trees brought in from some other continent to drain the swamp area which as is the case when we mess with Mother Nature backfired.  They drained too much and are highly flammable and hard to get rid of.  Yep... that's us.

Craig- ok...now I know to stake out I95 and the turnpike to catch the Craigmobile when he comes in for a visit.  Come down in October when Roger Mucci is in!!!!!  Do not even think of setting foot in PBC without a "hello".

Dorrie- We are so very lucky to be able to be out 365 days of the year!.

Hi Kathy -

What a cool National Wildlife Refuge!  So very different than the ones found in the high desert.  Very intriguing and your colleague is great.  Makes me wish I were closer so we could check it out.  Thanks for sharing the joy of the Everglades!

Best regards from the Q

Hi Kathy, I've walked at this refuge and it really is beautiful-very lush, lots of wonderful birds and you get to enjoy it all year round.  The Everglades really has a unique ecosystem.

It is so neat to have a part of the Everglades right in your neighborhood, so to speak.. A wonderful way to enjoy the abundant wildlife that thrives in the Everglades and the gorgeous greenery.

Hey Kathy, this looks like a neat place to visit.  I am not much of a bird person but flora and fauna yes, and gators/croc yes.  I'm assuming you can find them in Loxahatchee.  When you pronounce this do you think of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?  :-)

Hi john- this is one of the things we like best about this area.  So many things to see and do and the weather is so great we can do them almost every day of the year.

Joanna- it really is and the fact that we live so close always amazes me.

Malcolm - come on down.  The movie in the Center about the Everglades is worth it !

Sharon- I'd hate to tell you how many alligators there are out there!

Judi- When you think about what we've done to our planet we need to take better care of it.

Cathy- LOL-  Loxahatchee is such a mouthful!  There are some really interesting birds out there and yes alligators, bobcats, and deer.

Lou- It really is.  I always try to picture what it was like before all of us arrived.

I don't think most people realize how important the Everglades are to Florida's overall health and wellbeing, Kathy. Great reminder and a wonderful localism post.
