Joke of the day - #319: Why are we here?

I was thinking about the nature of the Universe the other day.  I know, I know.  It's an unusual subject for a real estate agent and I can assure you that my wife thought I'd be better off thinking about how to generate more listings.

I guess whether or not you find it interesting depends on your basic orientation.  Perhaps this short story will help to clarify that statement:

An English major at a university was taking an astronomy course to satisfy the science requirement.

During the last lecture of the semester, the professor spoke about some of the more exotic objects in the universe including black holes. Despite his teacher's obvious enthusiasm, the student showed no interest, as had been the case during all of the astronomy classes during the semester.

When the bell rang, the student turned to his friend and said, "The prof says that black holes are interesting, but I think they suck."

I sometimes get off on a tangent and spend some time thinking about the rather amazing fact that we're here and the world works the way it does.  If any of the basic constants that underlie the Universe had been different by just a fraction of a decimal place, we wouldn't exist.  Just change the number at the one millionth place by one and there'd be no need for Realtors or houses.

In their 1986 book, The Anthropic Cosmological Principle, John Barrow and Frank Tipler speculate on the philosophical requirement for the Universe to be so constituted that life must exist.  They formulate the weak anthropic principle in these terms:  "The observed values of all physical and cosmological quantities are not equally probable but they take on values restricted by the requirement that there exist sites where carbon-based life can evolve and by the requirements that the Universe be old enough for it to have already done so."  This is sort of a way to state the obvious: the Universe exists to host life, because we're here.

The strong anthropic principle is a variant of the weak one which goes just a little farther in its assumptions about life:
"The Universe must have those properties which allow life to develop within it at some stage in its history."
"There exists one possible Universe 'designed' with the goal of generating and sustaining 'observers.'"
"Observers are necessary to bring the Universe into being."

Such statements can be very entertaining subjects for thought.  Are we here simply to give validation to a vain Universe which needs an audience?  Sometimes it seems as if we're unknowing actors in a bizarrely written play.  A component of maturity is realizing that the world doesn't revolve around you, so perhaps our purpose is simply to observe.

What would you say, if I asserted that it has been scientifically proven that the human mind can directly interact with matter?  I know that this sounds like a real stretch, but it has been shown through millions of lab trials to a statistically significant degree that our minds can influence matter.  It is not a large effect or one which happens every time, but it is definitely there.  If you're interested in reading about this, the book, "The Conscious Universe," by Dean Radin offers a great and easily readable summary of the research.

Since we have the ability to actually interact mentally with the basic building blocks of the Universe, I tend to think that our role in existence is somewhat more than that of a pure observer.  This leads to all sorts of wild speculation which can easily get out of hand, but it is consistent with the basic ideas behind the Law of Attraction.

In some marvelous way, somehow we are so constructed that we swim in the universal sea of energy and manipulate it to our advantage.  I think that is an amazing thing and it makes me very grateful for the chance to experience life.

Namaste!

Eric,

Great thoughts for every profession. If we are recipients of such a wonderful "created" environment it might be interesting to seek out our Benefactor.

Have a great week,
