They paved paradise and put up a parking lot…” - A Central Boca Raton Debate -

The Siemens Group has proposed 291 new townhomes near the central Boca Raton community of Boca Del Mar along the old Mizner Trail Golf Club.  The proposed development has encountered harsh opposition from residents of the area as well as the local Sierra Club chapter.  There are two sides to this coin… One side is that the new development will create nearly 1,000 new jobs and this economy that’s major.  The townhomes will also offer a new solution to homebuyers that would like to live in new central Boca Raton homes, but who’s only options have been old and aging communities.  There will also be an increase in customer base for local businesses and increased tax revenue to the county.  The land proposed for use has not been maintained and the old golf club has become decrepit, the new project would build townhomes on the land as well as gardens with “green space”.  The other side of the coin is that since the golf club has closed the fairways have become more of a natural preserve in the area.  Residents of Boca Del Mar currently have scenic views of nature, whereas the new development would obscure any views with construction and new townhouses.  Another issue the residents have is that the new construction could potentially lower current home values and harm the financial integrity of the community.  Monday, September 26th the Palm Beach County commissioners will hold another hearing to hear both sides of the debate and come to a final vote on the matter.  RE/MAX Services own David Serle was asked to speak at the meeting for the side of the Siemens Group proposed development, however with delays in the meeting and time constraints he submitted his view on an opinion card.
