Conservation Landscaping Training and Demonstration Garden Installation

Join the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection, the Muddy Branch Alliance, the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB), and friends of the Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA) for a classroom training and hands-on demonstration of proper conservation landscape installation.  The City of Gaithersburg will also be on hand with resource information.

When
Saturday, October 22, 2011
9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Where
IWLA headquarters, 707 Conservation Lane, Gaithersburg, MD 20878.

About the Workshop
Homeowners can learn how to manage stormwater runoff from their homes utilizing conservation landscaping techniques. These landscape features, which include native plants and a substantial mulch layer, can effectively collect and treat stormwater and reduce localized flooding.

To effectively manage stormwater, conservation landscapes must be accurately sized and properly constructed. In addition to a lecture portion and hands on installation, this 1-day workshop will present a design segment for sizing and designing a garden and detail proper construction techniques for homeowners.

As a result of this training you will:

  • Understand why stormwater needs to be managed;
  • Understand the principles of conservation landscape garden location, design, construction and maintenance;
  • Be able to select appropriate vegetation;
  • Select and use design templates, build and plant a conservation landscape garden; and
  • Help to install a demonstration garden in a public place that may help other homeowners decide to utilize this residential stormwater management tool on their own property.

The workshop will include a 3-hour lecture with hands-on design component and after lunch, participants will install a conservation landscape garden on the IWLA property. This is a full day course. Lunch will be provided, but please bring plenty of water for the day. Please wear appropriate work clothes and no open-toed shoes. Please bring gardening gloves. Participants should also dress accordingly for the weather (this event will take place RAIN or SHINE unless severe weather threatens the safety of participants). Note – if garden installation portion is disrupted by weather, the garden will be installed on Sunday, October 23.

How do I Register?
You may register via the Muddy Branch Alliance website at www.muddybranch.org.
Registration will be on a first come, first served basis, and will be limited to 20 participants.

Is there a Fee?
No fee is charged for this workshop.

Roy, I think that second from the bottom is a Lantana plant. I just bought two this weekend at the Farmer's Market. Looking forward to the butterflies it will bring. I'll share photos soon. Love your photos. Makes us all happy and having a better day for seeing your flowers. Hope you have a beautiful day!

Roy, I am a bit confused, because I already posted a comment. I do love the information on how to help with storm water run off. I would love to learn more about it sometime and will need to dig if there is something like that in Lancaster.

Good morning Roy, what a great class on ways to conserve.  The landscaping piece would be really interesting.  You and Dolores should take the class.  Fun net-working event as well.  Love the pictures...beautiful as always.

Roy,

Love the flower pictures. A all day seminar and my kind of price being free. Sounds great but these days I am more of the Lazy Gardener type. Thanks for the blog.

Roy,

    This is a great seminar as it has a two fold purpose; you learn about how to use conservation landscape techniques but also do it and a the same time help the community out and it is free! Love the flower pictures as well!
