Fall Home Maintenance Tip #1 - Usher Fall Weather In, Rodents Out!

A mouse skittered through my living room last weekend, narrowly escaping death by both my cat and a largish shoe before he was safely scooped up into a plastic container and banished to the back yard. If he makes a repeat appearance, though, he’s on his own!

I’m not sure how the little guy got in, but I do know that as cold weather approaches there are likely to be more like him: mousefurry creatures trying to gain access to my cozy Noblesville home. I also know that cute as he might have been, he and his comrades can cause untold, and often unseen, damage – not to mention diseases, germs and the like.

Fall is a great time to fortify Hamilton County homes against would-be rodent intruders, which can include everything from my mouse to larger and even more destructive relations such as raccoons. Some suggestions for protecting your home from a rodent invasion:

  • Screen all exterior vents.
  • Ensure there are no gaps underneath garage doors.
  • Bring porch cushions inside, lest animals be tempted to nest in them.
  • Monitor pet doors – a favorite entryway for rodents.
  • Store firewood away from the house.
  • Trim overgrown vegetation and shrubbery around the house.
  • Eliminate temptation by storing dry food, pet food and birdseed in sealed containers.

Rodents can get into your home through the smallest of spaces. Don’t give them any more than they need!

Pat what great advice, when we lived in Boston,MA we had a visitor like that in the South End, keep in mind when you see one than a whole lot of others you do not we needed professional help and yes they used wire to block every small nook and cranny. The person told us that they can get thru some very tiny holes...

Pat, great tips and sound advice for things to do right now! We've had a few already in one of the cupboards.  It's Lee's job to usher them out.  But we need to seal up those little spaces as you point out...

Howdy and afternoon Pat

Pat, creatures sure do have a way of finding any little spot, which they are able to come into a home when the weather starts to turning cooler and cold, so they will be warm. Once a spot is found, they will get a hold of their family and friend and invite them to come and stay.

You sure have gave folks some mighty fine tips.

Have a good one

Excellent advice or avoiding having a few extra critters living in the house this winter...he was lucky he made it out. Hopefully he won't risk a return visit.

Pat  One year we had an obvious baby - he or she sat in front of us while Arthur scooped the mouse up and delivered it way into the woods behind our home.  Excellent community post with all good recommendations
