Herby K’s - Home of the SHRIMP BUSTER

HERBIE K

When we visit anywhere, we always want to do what the “locals” do.  We want a non-commercial, real people, a real experience.  My husband and I not only when we travel but also when we PCS to a new area.   I have been working on hitting all the “must-do” things in Shreveport-Bossier myself, and reporting back to you the awesomeness that I experience.  This time I wanted to give you a heads up on a experience you can take part in before it happens!

Herby K’s is a great Shreveport experience, with great food and great people.  Next Sunday (Sunday, October 16, 2011) Herbie K’s will be celebrating their 75th Anniversary with a Block Party and Benefit.  This is a must –attend kind of block party.  So if you want to experience Shreveport stop by from 2pm-6pm.

Herby K’s first opened as the Flying Crow and was originally a small store front that you could get packaged liquor, tobacco and the occasional sandwich.  When Herbert Busi Jr. returned from college in 1936 he transformed the family owned store into the restaurant we know today and gave it the nickname he picked up while at LSU in Baton Rouge.  The original Herby K has since past, but the restaurant is still ran by the family, along with some very loyal employees.

Herby K’s is most famous for the Shrimp Buster which Herby added to the menu in 1945, but some say their Gumbo is the best they ever had, and I highly recommend the onion rings that they batter and fry right there when you order them!  So you certainly cannot go wrong with the food!

For me one of the best parts of the experience is the location of Herby K as well as their building.  Located off Texas Ave, Herby K’s is essentially the only business still open in what used to be a thriving strip of businesses.  When the “Flying Crow” opened it was set off what looks like a Main Street.  The store fronts once included Peyton’s Drug Store, Commercial National Bank, Reeve’s Marine, Davis’ men Wear, Brook’s Grocery, Garrett Hardware, Whitefield Phillips Furniture, and Wallace Harley Davidson.  There was also a railroad roundhouse, which is what fueled Herby K’s in the beginning.  Now this part of town looks like a ghost town.  I always tell people, “When you think you are in the ‘wrong place,’ you are almost there!”  Herbie K’s is truly “off the beaten path.”  Their building is the original, and you can tell when you get there!  People might describe it as sketchy or a dive, but I would say it is vintage with all the right character.

So tomorrow I hope you can help Herby K’s celebrate their 75th Anniversary.  Tickets are $25 (kids under 10 are free) and there will be so much to do!  There will be various activities for kids including a bouncy castle, face painting and a dunking booth; as well as Live music, buffet, and even a Shrimp Buster Eating Contest!  All the proceeds will go to Shreveport Pet Savers, a local non-profit group whose mission is to save animals from being euthanized due to high numbers of unwanted and lost pets. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate!

See you Next Sunday
