BUFFUMVILLE DAM AND LAKE IN OXFORD, MASS.

The Buffumville Dam was built in 1958.  This was built to solve the flooding problems created by the storms of 1936.  it is comprised of almost 500 acres with 200 acres of water.  It is managed by the US Corp of Engineers.  The dam itself is earthen and 1/2 mile long.  The lake has a peaked storage capacity of 5.2 billion gallons to minimize downstream flooding.  It can rise 42 feet above normal levels.  There is a seven mile Lake Shore trail which begins at the beach and goes around Buffumville Lake.

There is a 27 hole frisbee golf course.  There is boating and fishing.  You can also rent a 3 acre island for up to one week.  How cool is that?  They start taking reservations January 1st.  Reserve early because the calender fills up quickly.  The park is open from mid May through mid September.  Buffumville Dam has become a huge recreational resource.  A must to take the 7 mile walk.
