Do We Expect Too Much of Active Rain?

This one has been building up for a bit and isn't in the theme of our typical posts, so here goes....community

We've been what we would deem hardcore Active Rain disciples since about mid-2010.  Buyers and sellers aren't going to fall into our laps just because we're here.  We've learned that results come with hard work and focus, and paying attention to what others in the Rain are teaching. And we've learned that there are tremendous friendships to be made.  And we've learned that there are some truly amazing people here who do amazing things for each other! We've said it before, Active Rain is MUCH more than just a collection of bloggers, it's a community IF you choose to let it be.

But what we don't expect?  Perfection.  It's not always going to be peaches and cream in the Rain.  Active Rain is fueled by people and machines, and we've never met either without some risk of failure.

Active Rain has had some technology bumps and hiccups.  The server outages were REALLY frustrating to everyone....but have you noticed?  How often are you getting the pear shaped error message?  The 500 series errors?  Almost never!  And if it does happen, chances are they're communicating the issue via the front page, Facebook and Twitter!

And when you consider how many technology platforms are out there, and all the possible combinations?  Macs, Windows, desktops, smartphones, iPads, laptops.  And ALL the browser choices?   And they're ALL changing, ALL the time.

So yes, there may be hiccups with compatibility, but you know the Active Rain team is working on it.  And it might not always get resolved as quickly as we'd like.....and face it, we're MOSTLY Type A people and YESTERDAY isn't soon enough when something isn't right!

And nothing seems to get the torches and pitchforks out faster than the topic of Featured posts.  Welcome to Dante's TENTH Circle of hell (yeah, he left that out of the book).  We truly feel its a catch-22 situation for Active Rain.

Publish the same people too often and you hear the grumbles that only the pets are featured (did you stop to consider that those bloggers write well and often?)  Flip the coin and lower the standards to get more inclusive, and another crowd will rumble about poor quality.

And don't even get started on what happens if a mistake is made by featuring a reblog or a copied post, because as we all know, they're the AR Gods and they're not allowed to make mistakes!

To quote Alexander Pope (1688-1744), "To err is human; to forgive, divine".  When it comes to Active Rain (or life in general for that matter), we could all use a lot more of that divine part.

Do you really think it's easy for them to pick through about 2000 posts a day and find the best 20 without someone thinking they could do better?  Let's be honest with that answer now!

It's been our experience time and again that if we let Kerrie, Bob, or anyone on the Active Rain staff know of a problem, especially an erroneous Feature, it gets taken care of, and quickly!  Trust them!  Let them know!

So calibrate yourself.  Are you paying attention to how Active Rain works today?  Providing the benefit of the doubt? Are you giving props where they're due?  Are you participating in the spirit of Active Rain as intended?  Or is it like some bad -ex, and all you focus on is what's wrong?  Are you expecting too much from the Rain?

Okay, climbing down off the soap box now....it's rarely used by us, had to go find it!

Let it Rain!

Bill/Bliz/Spear/ - Well put, my man/WOman/friend.  Sorry I missed you in A-Town, you'll have to shoot me an email and tell me how it was ... and remind me why I left;)

I love the occasional soapbox post, as I had a few of my own back in the day.

I can't even fathom how many Agents are actually still in the biz due directly to AR.  It was, is, and will be for sometime a great Resource & Community for the Real Estate Industry ... and to an outsider like yours truly.

I'm happy with AR!  They work really hard for us.  I don't know if they get enough thanks from us? Great post! Kristine :)

Jason, LOL!  I'll drop you an email on the A-town excursion :)  The soapbox just needed to be dragged out of the back of the closet, it's been stewing for a bit :)  The learning here is totally outstanding.  SEO, new marketing techniques, referrals, how to set up our FB Fan Page,  AR has greatly expanded our tool bag and we're very appreciative!  And in no way would we consider you an outsider.  You're privy to how the system works :)

Kristine, Thus our attempt to show some appreciation for what they do for all of us.  Can't be easy putting up with 200k+ personalities and all that comes with it!

Bill & Liz - some people thrive on anything negative instead of realizing all the blessings they have. In the last couple of months I haven't had one problem with AR and in the past when I did (a blog disappeared into the blogosphere) I emailed Bob and he someone retrieved and reinstated it immediately. As for features, and mistakes - you already know my feelings on that! ;) Have a great weekend!

Kristine, It would seem that way, wouldn't it!  And the reaction to your reblog is part of what drove this post to be written.  People really do need to just chill out a bit and address rationally....but that's the engineer in me talking again!  Bill

Hi Bliz, Love it! AR is full of just really wonderful people that I see in my AR world all the time, so in my naiveness it's hard for me to think that anyone would get all up in arms about some snafus here and there. Kinda makes you wonder how they would be to work with during a transaction when one of the many things that can pop up does. In the scheme of things they are but a small tiny bump..but yet words said to those that had no influence can cut deep. Great post! The suggest was already hit several times..so I'm clicking the other S button on your blog.

Cindy, MOST of our circle is composed of pretty positive people....fact is if they weren't we probably wouldn't subscribe to them.  It's when we go off reading outside that circle that we tend to increase the chance of encountering some rants about some AR issue or another.  Some I can understand, but it's just not a great use of emotional energy and blogging time.  I'd rather notifiy AR of the problem, and spend that time writing a business building post instead.  And the mean comments some leave, I just have little use for those.  We can disagree (sometimes I even expect it), but it needs to be kept civil and constructive. Thanks for subscribing!

Tom, It's all in the outlook isn't it?

Michael, I think I know who you mean.  I'm always puzzled....if it's that bad, why are you still here?  Oh, that's right, there's NO better place to promote and build your business!  This has to be one of the most cost effective platforms out there! :)

I believe that human beings, in general, are judgemental in nature.  It is a shame that we cannot be more understanding and forgiving of each other.
This is something that we talk about quite often over lunch at our office.

Personally, I'm trying to catch myself before the words come out of my mouth.  It's not easy sometimes.

Ron, Just the end of the world isn't it?? :)

Chris, We won't argue that point! :)  One of the benefits of typing, in general, that it is a bit slower than speaking, and SHOULD give us the opportunity to reconsider if need be.

Karen, That's certainly been our experience with the Staff.  We probably notice a few more things than we used to as we get around a bit more, and they're always right on it.  You'd swear they never take a day off :)

Liz and Bill, Thank you for sharing this post which included a comment about "The Spirit of ActiveRain".

I appreciate your willingness to share and to discuss opinions, and respect that quality in you, as a valued member and role  model for ActiveRain.  Your feedback, exchange of ideas and information is very helpful.

The Spirit of ActiveRain is well represented by you, and your actions.  Disagreements are a part of life, however, people will be judged based upon how they convey their disagreements.  Thank you for caring enough to speak up, and for the professionalism in your manner of communication.

In regards to your comment about Staff never taking a day off:  I've even received comments from Nikesh Parekh, ActiveRain - CEO, on a Sunday evening, expressing his thoughts about one of my recent posts.  They probably never do take a day off.  ;-)  Best wishes always.

Richard, We never expect total agreement, there's just too many people here to expect otherwise!  We do however expect to always keep it rational and civil, those that can't do so aren't those we'll seek the company of for the Rain.  Life's just too short isn't it?? :)

Dr, Wayne Dyer said,"When you look for occasions to be offended, you seldom disappoint yourself." If your mindset is to find things wrong...things you don't agree with...things to complain about...I have no doubt those people will be successful.  If your mindset is to learn things, to be exposed to different strategies, to connect with other agents from all over, and to do something beneficial for your business...I have no doubt people will be successful with that too. (I have been)

Ken, We're of the 2nd mindset.  Witnessed someone else tonight of the first mindset.  It's a favorite theme of theirs.  Sometimes you've got to realize there are things not worth the time to worry about.  As you so well stated there, those other things don't improve your business.  It's best to worry about the things that DO bring us business and that we can control.
