Giant Brainlike Fruit that Smells Like an Orange Discovered in Wilmore!

Osage Orange A fruit shaped like a brain that smells like an orange.  What could it be?Osage orange with other fruits.
In walking a property yesterday that I hope to list soon I discovered a very unusual fruit?  I immediately came home and started doing some research on the internet.

This fruit is not like any other.  It is adorning my kitchen table while I wait to introduce it to my grandchildren.

A found a bunch of good web pages that explain the history of this fruit. This one seems the most scientific.

This "brainlike fruit" seems so baffling.  Why is it so huge?  Why does it seem useless as a food?  An Osage Orange Tree Fruit

I discovered that the largest Osage Orange Tree in the United States is located right here in Harrodsburg on the Fort Harrods grounds.  It is not officially the largest because it has a split tree trunk.  Betsy from Tennessee has this awesome blog post.  The pictures you see of "my" Osage Orange will testify to the size of this intriguing fruit.

I am not sure if this is a "food" but it must be edible for some purpose?  This discovery of one of nature's treasures is once again a confirmation of the The Creator's power and majesty.

Paul,  That is a very interesting fruit is right.  I've never seen anything like it before.    Is it edilble?  If your grandchildren are young, it might be good for show and tell.

Yes, my grandchildren are young.  The two year old Caroline was playing with it most of the day. Dropping it on the floor, putting it with her baby dolls, rolling it off the table.  It is amazing!  Still has not broken and radiates a mild orange smell.  I guess it is not really edible but is quite an attraction and quite durable.
