Winter Storm Warning?

White iris in October in MassachusettsA winter storm warning?

How can that be?

I snapped the photo at right of my father's iris in bloom two weeks ago - and the other bud opened after that.

Today Massachusetts may get several inches of snow - wet heavy snow.  At least that's what the forecasters are predicting.  If the predictions come true it will be the largest snowfall recorded in October in our area.

While I'm not ready for winter - and convinced that any snow will soon vanish - that's not the half of it.

The problem is that the leaves are still on many trees - all the trees near me in fact.

The heavy wet snow that's forecast will be horrible for trees that are not made to carry the weight of snow on their leaves. Branches and trees will come down everywhere.

What a disaster!  Trees have had a really tough time of it lately in our area - many have died or are dying from last year's drought, many fell during the hurricane/tropical storm that came through a month or two ago, and invasions of non-native pests like the Wooly Adelgid and the Longhorn Asian Beetle are taking a toll.

Climate change is a bear!

I think we sent this weather on to you. We had rain and snow for two days. It's turning nice again, but I don't think we are going to see the truly warm weather again until April.

Oh, oh...my area, usually a "banana belt", for the region, is forecasting colder than the norm/more snow (usually, we get none!)...that La Nina weather pattern is still with us.

Hi Debbie ~ I heard about snow in Colorado - and that it had been really warm there right before.  It was a nice Fall while it lasted.

Hi Li ~ Topsy turvy weather all over the globe! Go figure, huh?

Hi Joe ~ I'm not too bummed out about snow in general but I'm really nervous about the trees.  We don't have enough of them as it is in the city.

Hi Bill ~ Aack!! Snow before Halloween should not be allowed.

Hi Hannah ~ I never believe forecasts like this either.  It did make me think that I want to do all those errands I've been putting off - soon - since everything is such a hassle once winter comes.

Hi Judy ~ Wasn't that unreal last year?  I usually have weather amnesia but I took photos of some of the amazing snowbanks.  What a siege that was.

You all sure got nailed with this one. I didn;t have any idea it was even happening until I started seeing comments and pics on Facebook yesterday. Yikes. All kinds of records broken and it's not even Halloween. This does not bode well for the coming winter.

I won't tell you what the weather is like out here on the Left Coast.

Hi Michelle ~ No kidding, huh?  I could not believe the footage of the snow falling at the White House.  Nuts!  I will be staying warm since I caved and turned on the heat.  I had been aiming for my next reading on Nov 9th or so which would have marked six months without heat.  Didn't make it!  Just have to say - love the new haircut / photo!

Hi Jeff ~ What a disaster!  My trees were spared but I can't even let myself think about what happened in other places.  It's bright and sunny today - better to see the flowers now that the snow is disappearing.  Enjoy your weather!!

Seems like we all missed FALL this year. Pretty much went from summer to winter. Of course, Im really speaking for Texans. I know that you received at least a little rain in between. Still not much of a fall though.

Hi John!  Our fall was actually not too bad - and it was nice and sunny and warm[er] today.  But snow in October should be illegal. But yes - the transition from hot to cool/cold is pretty drastic - it really should be possible to bottle one or the other for getting through the switch.

Dear Elizabeth -
When visiting my daughter and her family in Newton, I am the "gardener"! I saw some plants there that we don't have here in Atlanta - ICICLE PANSIES. Last year we put them in and they lived throughout all the snow and bloomed again in early Spring.
Having blooms around is so much fun!  I was really glad we found the plants.
Have a happy day -
Lynn
