Now is No Time to Cut Back on Marketing

The economy is flat and everyone is waiting for it to get moving again.  So I fully understand the need to trim budgets and save money.

That having been said, I see some agents cutting back on marketing.  To me, that's the wrong place to conserve money.

In a challenging market, the last thing you should do is cut back on marketing or advertising.  It's a time-worn adage that tough times are when you should be doing more advertising, not less.  This was certainly true during the Great Depression, when statistics showed that corporations which continued to be aggressive in their advertising did better than those that did not.

When we sign a listing agreement, we make a pledge to market and promote that listing.  Our sellers are counting on us to do so.

Using a resource like ActiveRain can help.  You're here already, so why not make use of ActiveRain's superb SEO and Web reach to promote your listings?  Blog your listings by address, add a generous dose of quality photos, slideshows or virtual tours and you have one more weapon in your marketing arsenal that will put your listings squarely in front of the public.

There are other free marketing tools (such as Microsoft PhotoStory) and resources which cost little or nothing and add value to your practice of real estate.  Dig them out, dust them off and put them to use on behalf of your clients!

Eric, I agree. Now is not the time to cut back on marketing or advertising.

Pamela - I still see agents and companies doing it though.  Fewer company dollars in the tight market have resulted in some companies spending less on helping their agents reach out to the public.
