Don't let your past performance determine your future....

Why do some people always succeed, while others are continually talking about succeeding?  It's always baffled me how often that in our day to day conversations that we hear the same banal repetitive comments about dieting, making money, or how we're going to do better in relationships.  But water-cooler discussion after discussion tends to be about the same thing.

I've wondered myself at certain times in my life, why my life was like a record that keeps skipping and playing the same line over and over again.  In wasn't until about 1992 that I was introduced to the concept of "What you don't know that you don't know".  So if you don't know that you don't know, then why should you care if you know that you don't know what you don't know....sorry for the mind twister, but philosophically it's important to understand that often in life we wander around not knowing that there are some pretty incredible tools that we all have access to, and often they are not available for us to use until they are unlocked.

So in 1992 my father talked me into taking this wild and crazy self help seminar called, "The Forum", by Landmark Education.  He also explained the wild and crazy history of this movement, from it's founder, Werner Erhard  with his est training, and then selling it to Landmark Education in 1991.  Soon I was with about 45 other attendee's discussing my past, present, and how to create my future.  Yes, it seems like psycho babble to most people, but in allot of way's it can really bring home that your life isn't a foregone conclusion.  Many people live their life like it was already mapped out for them.  Something bad happens when their younger and now their life is defined by that moment in time.  Landmark taught me a valuable tool that I've used ever since, and that is that past performance is not indicative of future performance, which until that point I truly didn't understand.

Sales is such a great career to practice these concepts. How often in sales do you fail to initiate because of past experiences.  How often do you think, "I know if I pick up the phone and call that lead, that they'll be ticked off, not qualified, or they may actually get angry with me".  I mean it's a reality isn't it, you make a sales call and something bad will most likely happen!    How many times do you think while picking up the phone, "hey, another chance to meet someone that will teach me something new about the world...wow I can't wait to pick up that phone"....I guess you can say the latter rarely happens.   Even with this training I often find myself falling into old habits and ways of thinking.  The reality is that our past often is the reason why most people fail in business, relationships and life.  Understanding how to recognize when the past is influencing our present is the key to unlocking future success.
