We All Have Losses....If You Dwell On Them You'll Stop Your Production!!

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with RE/MAX Executive Realty 104763

Do you tally your loses?  When I was actively working in real estate, I lost my share of listings to other agents.  Nothing in excess, but I lost a few.  No one closes 100% of the listing presentation they are invited to present.

When you lose a listing to another agent, do you try to figure out what happened?  Do you dwell on the loss or do you put it aside and go on to the next one?  I have to say, I didn’t think about the loss for one moment.

My thoughts were that if I investigated, the reasons would probably not be honest and I’d be set up to lose again.  Rather than torture myself, I was on to the next listing appointment.

We need to remember to continue to move forward and not allow anything to stall our movement.  Old business that was lost will stall your progress to secure new business.  Nothing in the real estate business is a guarantee, even if you think it is.  Never assume the business is yours because when you least expect it, someone else makes the score.

Onward and upward has always been my favorite saying, and it applies well to listings lost!!!

Hmmm... I agree that we should not dwell on losses. But it might not hurt an agent to take a few minutes of self-reflection to see if they can see a mistake that they could correct before the next presentation.

A seller might not give an honest answer, but we can be honest with ourselves.

For instance - An agent might think "Did I talk too much?" Many do. Or perhaps they arrived late, or were somehow disorgaized. Maybe they answered their phone and made the homeowner feel unimportant. Maybe they were dressed too casually or too formally for the property they wanted to list.

Most "old pros" wouldn't make those mistakes, but I've seen new agents make them time and again.

No one should spend time beating themselves up over lost listings (or buyers) but it could be a good idea to self-evaluate and make corrections.

Hi Barbara. There are many variables and we often get hung up on ourselves. Ironically when we brand ourselves we are selling our knowledge, experience, and/or expertise so when we are rejected we take it personally because it is personal. However I have gotten to the point where I accept that not everyone will like us. Therefore move on.

Lana....I'm with you on that.....not everyone will like us and it's not that we did anything wrong....sometimes we just don't mesh.....we don't blend well and there's nothing we can do about it....yes, move on.

Good afternoon Barbara,

You will always loose some..you can't and won't want to win them all. If you want the listing and didn't get it probably good to look over why the listed with someone else to see if you did something that could be corrected. Don't waste much time on it..if you need to improve something adjust your presentation and move on..next!

Barbara i am right thee in saying tht a loss can knock you down a couple of rings on that ladder but you have to remain focused on the positive than those things you can not control. great blog.

Scott....everyone needs to remember that no one gets them all....no one....and if we stay focused, when we lose one, we'll get two....you know that, right??

No choice but to move on, lol :)!  If you dwell on the loss, you won't ever move forward.  It's probably always best to evaluate what may have gone wrong so you can improve in the future..I would imagine that some of the time though, agent and seller didn't click :)!  Great post Barbara!

Barbara ... There's a great book that I'm listening to Called Failing Forward.  The premise is that failing at something  doesn't mean we are failures and the best thing we can do is learn from our failures and more forward and not repeat our mistakes!

This is very true.   You can't dwell on things that don't go well forever.  Forgive yourself  so you can continue to function.

BarbaraT- If i lose a possible client I do want to know why... just to see if there's something I need to do in my own presentation but after that, you're right... onward and upward.

"Dwelling" is something I don't do. But I do try to learn from each listing I do not get. And after some disappointments, I have a good solid plan to work off now. I still cant bullet proof it, but it was better than never sitting down to see where I could use improvement!!!
