Wasilla Alaska, Then and Now-1980s to 2011

Wasilla, Then and Now-1980s to 2011

Growing up in Wasilla, Alaska I can tell you things have changed!

The roads that were gravel or just dirt have mostly been paved or upgraded. We even have paved bike paths that go through town, around the Wasilla Middle School, through Wasilla Lake-Newcomb Park and around town.

The traffic lights have multiplied like bunnies! We had one, right on Main Street, back then.Wasilla Alaska, Then and Now- 1980s to 2011

We had a couple small grocery stores (Carrs and D & A Shoprite) and the one room Hernings/Teeland General Store. Now, D & A and Hernings/Teeland are closed but we have Carrs (Safeway), Fred Meyer (Kroger), WalMart, Target, 3 Bears box stores (like Costco or Sams) and many quick shops all over.

The mail was delivered to 'General Delivery, Wasilla Alaska.' I remember that building well because someone painted the state of Alaska on the side of the building. It was actually painted in such a way that it was the profile of a full black bear in the shape of Alaska. We have several zip codes now, post offices and annex stations, UPS, FED-EX and others. The bear has long been painted over to match the now mint green building.

We had two high schools, Wasilla and Palmer. It was Warriors vs. the Moose and Red Vs. Blue for rivalry. Palmer would host Wasilla at the 'Potato Bowl' football game in the fall (Palmer grows some awesome potatoes). Rivalry once prompted someone to dump a huge load of rotten potatoes on the football field as a prank. Now we have several schools, several mascots and even more school colors.

Homes have sprouted up where I used to ride my three wheeler.

Homes have been lifted an moved (or torn down) to expand roads or to add retail and shopping centers.

A field was cleared, a mall added, stores came and went. The mall was torn down after about a decade and is now home to Target, Walgreen's, Sports Authority, Taco Bell, Subway, Alaska Wild Berry Products and more.

We have restaurants for whatever your taste buds desire. American, Asian, Greek, Italian, Mexican, a few bakeries and at least on vegetarian friendly (more than just lettuce) and, of course, the standard fast food places too.

Wasilla has grown leaps and bounds since I was a kid. Some changes were necessary, others welcome but I still (at times) miss the way it used to be.

The photos to the left are of Seward Meridian. There were numerous homes that were purchased by DOT and then were (or will be for the once still there) moved. The other is a gas station on Knik Goose Bay Road that was there for as long as I can remember but is now gone.

This is where homes once looked out onto Wasilla Lake. The photo on the right is where the Cottonwood Creek Mall once stood.

Now the area is home to Fred Meyer, Kroger, Sports Authority, Subway, KFC, Carls Jr, Alaska Wild Berry Products and several more retail shops.

Hi there Mike, yeah, no one knew how to pronounce it until then. They could have shown a few better pictures that what they did though-they kept showing a bar in town instead of the Lake, the little airport or the mountains in the background of everything.

*side note-the airport was on our way home growing up and it has since been moved. It was just a cute little place for small planes but now it is much larger and more modern. Then is was not paved either, now there is 3700 feet of pavement. In the area the old airport was it is now a nice city park Iditapark or Wonderland Park. There are basketball courts, a skate park, a covered picnic area, kids play area, an honor garden and more.

Hey there Fernando, yep, we KNOW! When people first started to 'be able to pronounce Wasilla' as we call it, we had a hard time on the phones. Everyone we talked t from tech support, ordering ink or whatever would ask us the questions about her. We have always kept politics to ourselves so we wont go there but we always got the questions. Have you met her, do you know her, what do you think of her etc. Yes, yes (I was a city police officer when she was Mayor) and you have to do your own research.

Hi Michael, some things are for the better (certainly the upgrade f the three wheelers to four-I don't know how many times I rolled them). I will have to hunt down some old pictures.

Great story, Jacque & Larry. We were among those annoying tourists to Alaska in 2010 and seeing your post has brought back a bunch of good memories from our great trip to Alaska!
I still live in the area where I grew up and it is amazing how times have changed things. I can so relate to your story.
Thanks for sharing!
Bruce

I think we would all like to keep the towns we grew up in the same. But then, there wouldn't be any progress and everyone like progress, right?

Hi there Joan, I (Jacque) DO love the shiny things! Larry can tell you all about that.  :)   It is a neat town and a fun place to grow up in. Larry came as an adult (barely) but he is from an even smaller town (Glendive Montana) and it has not had the growth we have. It looks nearly the same but with more closed businesses. He still has family there and we love to visit them too.

Hi there Tammie, I miss parts of it but it is still a great small town! Just a little (lot) bigger than it was then.

Hi

I always enjoy reading about the past for other places. Yountville, in the middle of the Napa Valley, was know for all its bars and brothels back when. Now, all I have to say is "French Laundry".

Now this is a post that DESERVES the Gold Star!!!   I really enjoyed reading about how your community has grown and also the questioning political comments I was betting you would receive!   :0)   I'm looking forward to more of your travelling posts.

Thank you Susan! The political one has been interesting to say the least. :/   We have photos for the traveling localism but not a lot of time to put them together. It will happen though, I have promised myself some time for it.

It's nice reading about my home town.  We had the Wasilla Road House next to Teeland.  Back in 52 I remember the first day The town watched TV for the first time in upstairs Teelands store.
