Goal Setting Tips for 2012 Success

 

It is that time of year again, and businesses and individuals (sometimes they are one in the same) are gearing up for the coming year. Lots of re-evaluating and of course “goal setting”. In the last week I have been to numerous business meetings, read numerous blogs where “goal setting” was the major theme or topic of discussion. Goal setting is harder work than most think, as with most business exercises,  you get out of it what you put into it. Goal setting is no different. There are some pitfalls and mistakes that many make and there are ways to avoid them. Lets take a look at some tips.


Tip#1: Buy into the concept of goal setting. Do not venture off on a goal setting journey if you don’t believe the process is viable or valuable. Goal setting is a powerful, motivat
ing tool that can greatly help you achieve your full potential, but if you don’t believe in the process, it won’t happen. You have to believe in the process.


Tip #2: Decide what you want. Simple yet very important. Unfortunately people don’t put enough thought into what it is they really want to accomplish, and end up with goals like…”I want to become or do , blah, blah, blah. In other words, be specific about what it is you are after.  For example, don’t set a goal like, ” I am going to be a better teacher”. Try rewording and saying ” I will improve my teaching by writing better, more concise lesson plans, by enrolling and completing a lesson plan class by the end of the first quarter”.

Tip#3: Be realistic, by all means do not set unrealistic goals for yourself, it will only lead to a feeling of failure and have a negative effect on you. For example, if you are a
Realtor in your second year and this past year you completed 10 sales, don’t set next years goal for 100 completed sales. In reality that goal is not going to be met. Try something like, I will increase my sales by 20%, and I will do that by learning how to blog, adopting a video sales presentation etc. If you set too lofty a set  of goals, at the first bump in the road it will be too easy to say “I could never have completed that goal anyway” and drop off. In the same token, be sure to challenge yourself as well. Who was it who said, set the bar low so you always meet it, that’s the concept you are shooting for here.

Tip#4: Work as a team, if you are setting business goals, try working with someone else in the office who is in the same position as yourself, and create goals and monitor your progress together. Sometimes just having someone to be accountable to inspires the motivation needed when things get dicey and the temptation to give up arises. If working on a personal goal, get with your spouse, kids, etc to get it going and keep it going. Working together with family members can be fun and create some memorable family moments together.

Tip#5: Write your goals down, and place them in an area that is visible to you  on a daily basis. Review them regularly. Writing down goals in a notebook and stashing them away in a desk drawer is not going to produce results. On the fridge, next to your bathroom mirror, if business goals, try putting them in a nice frame and placing them right there on your desk for you and your co-workers to see. Encourage others to embark on a goal setting program, inspiring others is also self inspiring.

If you really take the project serious, and give it your all I am sure you will amaze yourself. It is amazing what some clear, well thought out, organized goals can produce. Try it, improve your self confidence and improve your life.

Writing goals down is such a critical step. It forces us to think deeper and clarify what it is we really want, and because it's something we can see and touch it makes them tangible.

Goal setting is just the beginning. One has to continuously monitor to stay on course and tweak the goal, should there be a need for that.

Good list Gerry, but I think the most important of the five is #5.  Writing down your goals is essential to the process and progress.  Written goals serve as a roadmap and our business Bible so to speak and they keep us on track.

One of the biggest things that should be considered is that the goal should be YOURS!  Not your broker, not your husband/wife, it should be your dream and desire or it won't work.
