One of My Resolutions for 2012

By
Real Estate Agent with Sabinske & Associates, Inc. (Albertville, St. Michael)

Have you ever taken an inventory of your home for insurance purposes?

If you have, you know what it takes.....days and days and days.

After Christmas, I always have the urge to purge.

So, as I did two years ago, this year will be another year of getting rid of one thing a day.

I can't stand clutter, and living with someone who collects...and collects for me...is nearly intolerable for my psyche.

So, every so often I purge.  And, I try to keep meaningful things.  But, I learned an invaluable lesson some years ago.  And, that is sometimes you need to "pass things along".  And, a great way to do that is by taking a photo of the item, and keeping that instead of the item itself

Photos take up very little space, especially digital ones that you can keep on a stick....or on the web.

So, if you are feeling a bit overwhelmed as I am.  I suggest that for every item you bring into your home this year (except food, etc.), you let something go to a charity or recycle it .

Remember, reuse, recycle and repurpose.  I guarantee that your life will be much improved as mine as this past year.  Less to clean and care for gives you more time for fun AND work.

Try it for a month....let me know how it goes.

Many of us need to purge our stuff.  A photo inventory of possessions is a great idea and a good item to include in our resolutions.

Happy New Year!

Suzanne, good for you!  I have less clutter than I did a year ago.  Still, I'm a long way from the Zen minimalist I'd love to be!

I clean out every six months, usually around the Fourth of July and then again at Christmas.

Hope you had a beautiful and blessed Christmas day. Wishing you all the best for 2012.

This is a great reminder! I have to do the same, my three kids got a bunch of new stuff (2 birthdays and Christmas), gotta get rid of lots of the old stuff. I totally relate to living with someone who is a packrat collector. I just get rid of things when he's not around, unless I know it really is a treasured item. I love the 3 "R"s!

Happy New Years and Happy purging!!

That makes me shudder.  But, I know before you throw give anything away, you will run it past a great antique collector.  Have fun!

The week between Christmas and New Year's is an excellent time to purge - thanks for the timely advice.

I hope I can inspire you all to at least try it for a month.  It really doesn't take too long to do a closet or sometimes even a room.  And, you will feel so much relief when it is done!

Suzanne, I am so with you on this! I cannot stand clutter! I have several "collectors" in my house, but they are beginning to get with the program. The younger ones are learning that hiding it under the bed is not called putting it away! lol Mom will find it and put it away...for good!

Suzanne:

I started purging last year and am still at it.  I know it will take quite a while, mainly because I have a husband whose goal in life is to have one of everything in the world.  We talk about this often and I think I have convinced him that he needs to trim his collections to one or two of every item.

Suzanne: The clutter (not mine) is driving me crazy. Last year a friend used some downtime to purge 6 things a day. I think a goal of one each day is a good start! Sounds like an AR contest to me. LOL

Trimming the inventory is a good thing...if you have ever dealt with the disposal of an estate....this will have greater meaning than ever before !

This is a great idea.  I do purge every so often, and it always feels great afterwards.  But I love the rule, "bring one in, throw one out."  I'm going to definitely try to do that!  Thanks.

Suzanne - recycling is a great way to get rid of stuff that you don't need that others might need. We are trading kids clothes with a friend, kind of like a swap if you would. Have a great 2012.

Suzanne you had mentioned: "Are there any plans to find housing for the homeless? Just wondering. Our winters are brutal usually, and I understand your weather is better by far, but someone might be able to make a dollar or two with some subsidized housing of some kind....just curious."

Hindrances vary from good ole boy politics, to "not in my neighborhood", zoning issues, high cost of land and more.  There are a few government agencies addressing the problem and some private foundations and trusts.  Some of the homeless would RATHER live on the beach and not be bound by 'rules and regulations'.  it's an ongoing issue.

Good idea, Suzanne. It amazes me how easily our lives ( and closets, and rooms) become over-full of stuff ....just stuff. I used to like clutter. Reminded me of Grandmas house, I guess. But now that I am Grandma  ...not so much.
