Extreme Makeover Home Edition Ends

I love this show, can't watch it without a box of Kleenex nearby. Part of that is that it expresses how important 'Home' is. Anyone is the industry should understand that, Architects, Builders, Realtors, Designers. A home isn't just a place to hang your coat, park your car. It is a refuge, a safe haven. We in the 'biz' understand that more than most. Short Sales and Foreclosures are more than a terrible drain on the economy - they are a drain on the emotions, a loss of security, the loss of dreams. I understand that, any Realtor with a heart would.

Back to the headliner..... Tonight I watched a story about the Johnson-Goslee Family. 16 year old Wyzhir had lost his left hand in an accident a year ago. But that didn't stop his dreams of helping everyone in his close knit community, or deter him from his dreams of someday being a designer, maybe even an Architect. EMHE gave him a chance at those dreams, and his family a chance at a new life. This kid is charismatic, bright and very intelligent. And his mom was supportive of that, giving him freedom to explore his dreams.

I understand the kid's loss. My father lost his right arm above his elbow when he was 19 in an accident in a Chicago furniture factory. Growing up with that man didn't bother me a bit, he seemed so natural to me. My brother lost his left leg just below the knee in a gun accident. He's proud to wear his prosthesis in shorts. Just the way he is.

Two of my favorite quotes from the show:

"Allow your differences to empower you." Sound familiar? Think niche marketing.

"All you need is 20 seconds of insane courage and I promise you something great will come of it." from 'We bought a Zoo.'

It's just too bad that a show like this that has brought joy, inspiration and good works to so many has to end. Extreme Makeover Home Edition, I will so miss you!

I didn't know it was ending either. We actually had one episode filmed right here in Livermore. It was so cool to visit the site everyday and see the chaos and the quick transformation. The 100+ weather probably kept some away from the area, but we managed to get there every day. It was pretty darn cool.

Good morning John. I saw the show you talked about and it was inspirational. I generally thought it, the show was uplifting but the crass way in which they destroyed the old homes always bugged me. The reality is Ty moved on and that was that. We should look for examples in our own cummunities, and failing that create one.

Praful, Paddy, I didn't know it was ending either until last night. There was a story on ABC's site about EMHE's last build.

Karen, that must have been exciting to watch it as it happened!

Yes, Sally, those kleenex really came in handy.

Sheila, 9 years is a pretty long run for any show. And that Wyzhir was just an amazing kid.

John, I saw parts of that show.  I believe the show and the opportunities it presented will be life changing for him.  I embrace both quotes ... most especially the second one.  It is why I will be jumping out of an airplane with my son in 2012.  I'm ready to push the limits ... go to a new level!  I did not know the show was ending!

John

Like you, I always ended up in tears watching this show. Haven't watched it lately, and didn't know it is ending.

But I am inspred by what you wrote about your dad and your brother. You have built-in inspirations right in your family :)

Thanks for sharing.

Kathleen, I believe the kid will take those opportunities and run with them. Jumping out of an airplane - that's really pushing the limits!

I agree Pacita. It is amazing that sometimes everyday experiences can make you a stronger person and give you inspiration, and also give you a greater understanding.

John, no doubt that show can be a real tear jerker most of the time...and I do believe in the "...20 seconds of insane courage..."

Nick, sometimes 20 seconds of courage is all it takes to make that next step or that all important contact!
