Hmmm... is that cake?

Failure.  It's a bitter pill to swallow.  At some point we have to step up and admit that we've failed... and I have.  Big time.

About this time, last year, I announced that, as my new year's resolution I was beginning a diet.  My goal, at the time, was to lose a total of 50 pounds over the year.  I gave myself some interim goals... but the main goal was 50 pounds over the length of the year.

On January 1st, 2011, I began the quest... the Reckoning.  As part of the reckoning I set four goals.

     * A nine-pound loss... I succeeded...
     * A twenty-five pound loss...I also succeeded... don't worry... don't get nervous, I'm not going to show you photos of me in a Speedo®
     * A thirty-four pound loss... I succeeded... woo hoo!.
           and the final goal of
     * Fifty pounds... on this goal I failed...

I made it to a total loss of somewhere around forty pounds... and then got stuck.  I became complacent... and bit by bit, pound by pound, the pounds began reattaching themselves to me.  It was a family reunion, and I welcomed the pounds back like long-lost relatives. I have discovered that I'm allergic to food... I break out in fat!

So... here I stand at the crossroads of Failure and corpulence... er, I mean Success.  I'm not the type of person who gives up easily.  (Don't get me wrong, I DO give up... just not easily!)... So, I'm going to go at it again with the same basic goal set.  I didn't gain back all the weight... just most of it.  But I'm going to set my goal at the same place... I'd like to lose 50 pounds over the length of 2012.

I will try to do what I did last year (at least at the beginning of the year) and post the "loss" at bottom of my posts.  And I'll start dieting January 1st.

Wish me luck, and feel free to join me in the flight from fat.

Alan

What really worked for me was to truthfully write down everything I ate in protein, calories and carbs. I did it for year and lost over 100 lbs. When you see the high numbers for some foods, it is easier to eliminate just  a few of the really bad items. A simple thought I always keep in mind, if you eat 2 pats of butter a day, eliminating one = 2 pounds in a year. cheers in 2012 cvc

Cute post Alan.  I'm on the seafood diet . . . I see food, I eat it.  Actually, I've done well this past year.  and you'll find that being on a "diet" is a lifelong endurance.  Best of luck this year!

Carla - I am familiar with that diet.  It truly is a way of life, rather than a diet.  So far that "way of life" has rejected me.

Alan,

I lost 18 pounds last year and my biggest goal for this year is to keep it off.  The one best tactic I can tell you is I didn't really try to diet as change my lifestyle.  However, these big buffets for holiday parties are killer.... I am good not overeating when my choices are fewer.   We got invited to a football party today and it was not my finest moment.  Tomorrow is a new day.  I figure if 95% of my days are good, I will be ok.  I just have to have a party/social allowance day on my calender every few weeks.

All the best, Michelle

Alan- I have to confess, I missed many of your excellent posts (and those of others here) whilst I was making Christmas cookies and alas eating them. (They have since been given away... I call that spreading the calories) You did not fail because look at the poundage that you did drop.  So here's to 2012! I know you've heard this but really don't think of it as a diet.  Diets are designed to be have a start and end date.  Think of it as a lifestyle change. Good luck!!!

I feel your pain, because it's my pain too.  Carbohydrates are like a drug to me -- once I have the first glass of wine or piece of bread, I just keep on eating.  My goal is a little less than yours, but I've failed to lose those same pounds every years for the last 10 years.  Putting your loss on your posts is gutsy, I must say!

Alan--Have you tried posting the number that you want to be on your desk and frig?  I understand it's hard at family gatherings and when you are out of your own space.   Say the goal is 185 pounds.  Each time you reach for something that you think is not a good choice, ask yourself "Would a 185 pound me eat this?"  Just a thought....

Dianne - for me, it's not a question of carbs... or anything else for that matter.  For me, it's portion control.

Tamara - Actually I posted it somewhere far more visible.  My weight loss is posted HERE online, where I visit each and every day... and my loss is noted at the bottom of every post.  Can't get much more accountability than that.

Alan--I see the accountability here, but the goal #, whatever that is, say 185, posted around the house and running in my head.... I find the actual number I'm shooting for is more effective than the total # lost.... just one of my idiosyncracies....

And you are a brave and open man to post here for all the world to see!!!!

Tamara - I do what I can... the goal is up online... that's as much as I need.  I see it each and every day.  But good idea, thank you for that.
