My Holiday Season is Far From Being Over...

My Holiday Season is Far From Being Over.

First of all I would like to say the I am happy that this year I didn't see Christmas trees that got thrown away the day after Christmas. Since the New Year is the most important Holiday for me It was really sad to see those threes laying around and I just don't understand why people cant wait until the New Year.

My family is from Russia and we have our own celebrating scheduled. When I came to this country 13 years ago we celebrated only New Year and I was really lucky to grab a New Year Tree on Christmas Day otherwise I would have not got one (the owner of the shop thought I was odd ;-).  I kept my tree until the Old New Year and my neighbors thought that I am crazy when they saw my tree on the curb in the middle of January. For this reason we switched to the artificial tree  which is quite beautiful. A couple years later we realized that kids are under the influence of a Christmas Holiday season and waiting for Santa to come, plus we loved the spirit and happiness so we decided to celebrate Christmas. Than we thought that since part of our family had Jewish roots why not celebrate Hanukkah as well LOL.

Russian Santa and his grand daughter SnegurochkaBut this is just part of our family's Holiday Season! In a couple of days the real fun will begin. the holiday that was the main holiday of the year and brings memories from the childhod. The New Years Eve!!! I grew up in the Soviet Union - the communist country where it was not popular to express your religious believes (in worst case scenario you could go to jail) so during all this Soviet era people shifted to power their Christmas Celebration to the New Year which has become a really friends and family event with lots of food and drinks, and present exchanges, whole night TV entertainment programs with New Year shows, New Year Tales and New Year concerts. The Russian Santa called Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost) he comes with his grand daughter Snegurochka (the Snow Maiden)to bring kids presents. If I would live in Brooklyn I would probably be able to book their visit to our family. Here in Houston I just show their pictures to my daughter and will leave presents under the tree.

Our New Year celebration will begin when the New Year will come to our friends in Australia, than we will have Champagne with our Russian friends, than friends in Europe, than when New Year will come to the US we will celebrate with New York and finally at midnight in Houston we will be done...or may by not... now I have friends in San Diego, San Francisco, Vancouver and Maui...I guess you know what will happen...

Wait a minute it's not over yet. On the 7th of January we will celebrate Russian Orthodox Christmas and than on January 13th The Old New Year.

The Old New Year is a traditional holiday pretty much only Russians celebrate. It's all started probably because the Christmas celebration was prohibited so people decided to celebrate  the New Year twice according to both New and Old Styles (Catholic countries in Europe were using Gregorian calendar since 1753 but Russia adopted Gregorian Calendar only ofter October Revolution in 1917. Russian Orthodox Church still uses Julian calendar). According to the Julian Calendar the New Year according tho the Old Style would fall on January 13th.  It will be another pleasant evening with friends and family.

Happy New Year to all my friends!

Karen Anne, my husband was born in Lithuania ;-) If by any chance you are planning visiting Houston you are welcome to stop by here at The Woodlands. I am sure we will have a lot to talk about.

Sharon, It's not hard at all, just follow the time zone map LOL. BTW both of my kids haven't ever missed the midnight on the New Years Eve even when they were babes.  One time we were celebrating a New Year in Denver and since it's a family tradition we were going to the hotel party but they didn't allow kids, we explain to the manager that New Year is a big deal for us and there is no way we could leave our kids at the hotel room on the most important night of the year. The manager was a very nice guy and gave us little area in the corner of their hall away from the Champagne table.

Hi Anna ~ I loved reading about your Christmas and New Year's celebrations in Russia!  I can't believe you've only been "over here" for 13 years ... your English is so good and it seems like you're a native already  :-)

It was interesting to hear about the Old New Year, too!  That is a lot of holidays to celebrate especially if you throw in Hanukkah too!  Have a wonderful Holiday Season -- because you'll be celebrating long after we've put it all away  :-)

Thank you Al, Happy New Year to you and your family.

Thank you Maureen for the compliments on the language. My son has been editing all my posts, and he says that  I am doing better now  ;-). The only native person in our family is our 7 years old daughter but she is too young to edit for me...well sometimes when she is landing for a hug she is catching misspelled words. Happy New Year to you. I hope you will have a great start in January and will get busy right away.

Anna, you are a treasure!  Coming from where you came from to live here is a fortunate thing for those of us who take our freedom for granted.  Our country is made greater and stronger by people who understand what it is to be free.  Celebrate and enjoy your heritage proudly and enrich us all, take care and enjoy every day of your holiday season.  Best wishes to you and your family.

Ana

Hi Anna--your tradition sounds like a lot of fun. I think Christmas being celebrated on only one day is a waste.  I love how you extend the celebration and the partying.  I hope you have a very Happy and Joyful New Years!

Wow, I got a little history lesson, from you Anna!  Love it!  I actually celebrate New Years on the first day of spring, March 21st, but also honor the Gregorian New Year!  Often our information about how things are celebrated in other countries is "politically correct" and what the country wants us to know, so I really appreciate you sharing an "up-close and personal" view of Russia. Have a WONDERFUL holiday, all the way through the 13th!

Hi Anna - and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!  I appreciate your willingness to share special memories and celebrations from your family traditions with us.  I have always been fascinated with Russia and it's on my Bucket List to visit.  May your New Year be prosperous and blessed, ALL YEAR LONG!!  I am taking down the Christmas tree and decorations today, but must admit that I hate this chore.  My home always seems barren (which it's not) and plain for the first week after putting up the "treasures".

Cheryl, Happy New Year! I am you and me celebrate the same holiday in Spring. In Russia it called Maslenitsa when people are saying good by to the winter and welcoming Spring. They are making pancakes that symbolize the sun. It is a week of great festivities and people believe that the way you celebrate Maslenitsa will reflect their year ;-) Very last day is Forgiveness day when everyone is asking for the forgiveness from heir friends and relatives.

Tammy, Happy New year. I know what you feel. I will take mine down on Jan 14th and I will fill fine because I know that I have enjoyed it two weeks longer than everybody else here.

Russel, thank you for your wishes. I hope you are having a great first day of the year!

Anna:  My husband's father was from Serbia so we keep the tree up until after the 7th.  It was a lot of work hauling it up and decorating the house so I am glad to have those extra days to see all of our decorations and trimmings.  For our waistlines, we skip having a second Christmas dinner.

Karen Anne, you are right it's never hurt to ask LOL. Well ...Russian Santa talked to American Santa and they both decided that the American would bring all presents...and a small present will be from Russian Santa as well....tonight ;-)

Thank you Eric! Happy New Year to you and your loved ones.

You are so kind, Karen Anne, thank you. It is as you said a Little Christmas because all stores switched to the Valentines theme already. But still it is nice to have a little family time together and everybody will be happy to get their little Christmas gifts tonight.
